I went to Sombr’s first arena show last night. It was exactly the blend of awkward-earnest you’d expect from a 21yo rockstar with legions of teenage fans. But now I’m fixated on how I can convince Roger’s Arena into hosting a seismometer for match day & concert seismology. pnsn.org/blog/experim...

Our fault for installing a seismic station at a high school, really. Article: pubs.geoscienceworld.org/ssa/srl/arti... Signal from “At risk: Earthquake & Tsunami on the West Coast”
Photograph of a book page with a seismic signal. The rest of the page reads: “1 minute
The characteristic signature of an earthquake - a P wave followed by a higher-amplitude S wave - is clearly missing in the record at the top of this page, collected on January 11, 1996. This recording shows a series of irregular waves interrupted by periods of quiescence. The record came from a seismograph located on the grounds of the Port Alberni High School and was telemetred to the Pacific Geoscience Centre. Based upon his experience and the character of the recording, one of the seismic technicians thought that someone was trying to break into the concrete vault that housed the seismograph. He phoned the Port Alberni RcMP who promised to immediately investigate. A short time later, the technician received a return phone call reporting that a young couple was found in flagrante delicto on the roof of the seismic vault. To our knowledge, this is the world's only seismograph recording of an act of love.

This seismogram was recorded by a seismograph located in a vault on the grounds of the Port Alberni Secondary School on January 11, 1996. The repeated waxing and waning of energy and the lack of distinct P and S wave phases indicate that this event was not an earthquake. It was discovered that its cause was a young couple getting to know one another on the roof of the seismic vault.”

Picking up a raspberry shake is pocket change for a major arena (mine is at the Museum of North Vancouver: stationview.raspberryshake.org#/?lat=49.213...) && the resulting stories are exactly the sort of lightweight fluff that goes viral. I’m 100% certain I could match seismic signature to set list

Mount St. Helens Archive @mountsthelens1980.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
This morning's "Today's Document" from the National Archives was a 1946 aerial photograph of our good friend Loowit. Since they're not on here, here's an annotated version of the image with some...okay, a good number of landmarks noted on screen — many of which are still here.
A black-and-white aerial photo looks straight down on Mount St. Helens before it erupted. Rough, ridged slopes fan out in every direction from a bright white patch of snow and ice near the center, with narrow strips of snow filling the gullies. White labels mark landmarks. The Pre-1980 Summit sits at the center with Shoestring Glacier just above it, and The Boot is to its left with Dogs Head higher up. East Dome and the Plains of Abraham are near the top. Warm Flows and Monitor Ridge are on the right. Windy Pass, Sugar Bowl, and Goat Rocks run down the left edge, and Floating Island Lava Flow and Toutle Canyon are at the bottom left. September 28, 1946. National Archives, Records of the Defense Intelligence Agency, modified with added labels.

Jupiter's atmosphere looks very much like... a diapiric landscape in Iran or Suleyman in Pakistan. It does tell you a lot about... how fascinating is salt tectonics. (Jupiter is nice too, yes).

When I read mining news, I always look up the companies to see their projects and who’s on the board to see if I know anyone. This is how I usually realize which companies are sketchy, or at least appear that way. Well today I saw this article: www.mining.com/greenland-mi...

While parked at a sand ridge nicknamed “Chocolatal,” NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover used its black-and-white navigation cameras to capture panoramas at two times of day. The first was taken on Aug. 30, 2026, at 9:56 a.m. local Mars time; the second was taken on Sep. 2, 2026, at 5:39 p.m. local Mars time. Those dates correspond to the 5,000th and 5,003rd Martian days, or sols, of the mission.

A similar swarm occurred at another offset in 2021. Part of the gradual coalescing of a fault over hundreds of thousands of years.
