The longstanding Charles Sumner elementary school in Boston is merging with another BPS school next year into the Sarah Roberts school. Sarah Roberts was the 5yo plaintiff in the first school segregation case in 1849, and she was represented by Charles Sumner and Robert Morris.

She’s right that I’m not a big fan of MCAS. I work for a group that’s developing an alternative. We talk about how many students at her school are learning in their non-native language, so I guess that’s what she’s referring to when she says I will “make learning easier” for multilingual students.

This is exactly right. We need an affirmative vision of egalitarian pluralism - of a society in which the individual’s status would no longer be determined by race, gender, religion, or wealth. And we need political leaders able to make the case for it, defend it, fight for it. We need better.
