Anyhoo we know a lot about how to make schools work, and have for a long time (see Effective Schools research from the 1970's and 1980's). To me the question is not what to do, but the political will to make it happen and consistent support for the hard slog of making it happen on the ground.

Appreciate how @jeremylsinger.bsky.social puts current attendance trends in historical context here. The crisis discourse suggests a huge shift, when evidence points to longstanding indicators of poor attendance that still need to be addressed.

NEW: We connected school attendance value-added estimates (for 2022-23 through 2024-25) to statewide survey data on school-based attendance practices. Our goal was to identify effective attendance strategies (e.g., specific practices, organizational systems, staffing, leadership). What did we find?🧵

Can't wait to read this! From abstract, this also looks like an amazing teaching tool for phd students: 1. Great research question 2. Great research design 3. Unexpected results (based on researchers' priors) 4. Still produces useful refinement of expectations and theory (because of #1 and #2)

School transportation seems like one of those obvious resources that is essential to making public school work, yet it often gets short shrift. I was glad to work with Sam to summarize what we know about school transit usage, offerings, and effects in this @aefplivehandbook.bsky.social chapter.
