75% of voters surveyed said Trump would “definitely” or “probably” steal their lunch if given a chance. Most voters saw this as a negative. But 30% of Trump voters viewed it in a positive light. “If Trump can steal my sandwich, he deserves to eat it” said Republican Herbert Splonge, of Delaware.

We already have proof of concept: it is entirely possible to sell genocide and ethnic cleansing to the British public, and to simply crush any opposition. Whether that could now move on to e.g. black vans and roundups here is another matter, but that shit is well underway in America. So, why not?

if you shoot guns enough (I do), you quickly meet this type of guy, who will tell you just how Excited he is for someone to break into his house so he finally has the excuse he needs to dump a mag into them [and this type of guy is unfortunately quite dominant in US gun culture]

To be frank, I have often found there to be major discrepancies between the stories Americans tell themselves ("Don't Tread On Me") and this culture of workplace docility and authoritarianism. The more obsequious and deferential you are, the more likely you are to get a promotion.

Fixed that for you.
An image of academic fields arranged by purity. in ascending order: sociologists, psychologists, biologists, chemists, physicists, and mathematicians furthest to the right. Underlying all of them are epistemological philosophers who appear to be supporting the whole thing.

While this is technically true, many fields owe their existence to philosophy or draw directly upon philosophy for its theories. The American Psychological Association, for example, used to meet concurrently with philosophy and William James and John Dewey were founding members.

That said, the argument about purity of fields is largely useless as fields developed to engage in inquiry into specific areas. To put them in competition is to fail to realize that we all can learn something from the other and that no one field has a claim to ultimate truth. Not even philosophy.

i feel like we just need to admit to a lot of young people that our systems completely failed them. we let digital tools in the classroom and social media algorithms use them like lab rats and now half of them cannot have a basic, polite human interaction.

The worst case scenario isn’t “AI goes rogue and makes disastrous mistakes,” but a bunch of people at at AI startup over-promising what their systems can do, get handed access to critical systems, write sloppy prompts, code, and configurations, trigger a disaster, then trying to dodge responsibility by screaming about the Singularity and AGI, and flooding technically illiterate regulators with a massive tsunami of technobabble.

What works even better at dulling resistance than forever edging a populace with constant low-level aggravation & stress is if you could somehow make them all sick—not so sick they can’t work, just sick enough to collapse at the end of the day Like, I don’t know, contaminated lettuce or something

But at least constantly-stressed, constantly-aggravated people are exhausted, & exhausted people don’t have the energy to resist Whether that was the point or merely a fantastic side-benefit for the cool guys who assured us they weren’t like the other industrialists seems an unimportant difference.

A truck driver working 40-hour weeks to make $50,000 a year pays about $3,800 in federal income tax. An 8% rate. An investor earning the same $50,000 in long-term capital gains pays $0. Work gets punished. Wealth gets rewarded. This tax code is a scam.

"Eugène Delacroix's painting 'La Liberté guidant le peuple' ('Liberty Leading the People'), depicting the French revolution as a ragtag group of peasants led by a flag-waving, bare-breasted incarnation of 'Liberty.' The painting has been altered: the scene is now being observed with a giant, smoke-shrouded CCTV dome, and the distant building have been replaced with a mainframe computer.
