Foxes In Love @foxes-in-love.bsky.social · 3h
A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue and Green are just coming home, arriving at their parking spot to find that the car next to their spot is parked just on the border painted between the two parking spots.
Blue: Ugh, the neighbour has parked right onto the divider line again.

Blue frowns behind the wheel, while Green sits on the passenger seat, looking unbothered.
Blue: Would you mind getting out of the car so I can park?
Green: Sure.

Having parked his car right next to the line as well, Blue peers out of the driver's seat. Green is standing outside, observing the parking job.
Blue: Am I still in our spot?
Green: Yep, you're in.

Blue's car is now parked right onto the border of the parking spot, so close to the neighbour's car that it would be impossible for the neighbour to open the driver's side door. Satisfied with the work well done, the foxes leave.

Remedios Varo's "Character" captures a mystical, androgynous figure enveloped in swirling, fiery textures, evocative of both transformation and introspection. The artwork reflects Varo's interest in surrealism and esotericism, highlighting her unique style that intertwines fantastical elements with metaphysical themes.

by Fukuoka-based resin artist Sakae, this hair ornament (kanzashi) depicts a cluster of gentian or bellflower-like blossoms
Crafted with sublime, crystalline precision by Fukuoka-based resin artist Sakae, this hair ornament (kanzashi) depicts a cluster of gentian or bellflower-like blossoms suspended above a soft, rippling watery surface. Two fully opened trumpet-shaped blooms radiate in translucent sapphire-blue, their ultra-thin resin petals framed by dark, delicate wire contours that capture ambient light along their flared edges. Tiny, glistening resin droplets cling to the inner throat and petal surfaces, mimicking fresh morning dew. Nestled beneath the blue petals are delicate, chartreuse-green leaves and closed buds extending along a slender black pin (kanzashi-foot). Below, the smooth, pale-blue background reflects the soft ripples of liquid water, casting a shadowy, blurred reflection of the ornament into the depths.

I'm going to elaborate on this in as calm and reasonable way as possible, but sincerely: fuck off
the society of authors' feedback form about why you're not renewing your membership. In the write-in box, I have written: "I was shocked and deeply disappointed to see the magazine issue and now charter statement on genAI, which both seem totally full of waffle and apologist compromises.

This is a technology being used to put authors and illustrators out of jobs, using stolen work, and depleting the capacity for critical thought in people who use it. I get that you’re trying to make industry bodies agree to the charter as a ‘small step’ in the right direction. But I fundamentally disagree with the idea of some ‘ethical’ use becoming possible - look at the companies running these things, the severity of its environmental and community harms, the exploitative processes used to build and maintain the databases and server banks required.

As a full-time author who's marginalised and severely disabled, I do also find the idea that genAI companies are somehow making my job more accessible - not looking to undermine and destroy it - insulting and patently absurd.

I thought the SoA was supposed to advocate for authors' rights, and pleading with industry bodies to use this tech, but nicely, feels like a massive concession, and not one I'm able to be at all associated with."

by Fukuoka-based resin artist Sakae, this hair ornament (kanzashi) presents a glowing Japanese lantern plant or winter cherry (hōzuki) suspended from a slender metallic pin. The lantern-like outer calyx is hand-formed from gossamer-thin, translucent resin in vibrant shades of amber-gold and fiery orange, framed by delicate vertical wire ribs that taper to a soft point at the base. Suspended within the glowing translucent husk is a spherical, deep-red berry, catching backlighting to radiate like a miniature burning sun. Draped along the straight metallic shaft (kanzashi-foot) is a delicate chain strung with faceted crystal beads in violet, amethyst, amber, and olive tones, culminating in a teardrop-cut violet crystal pendant. The ornament is backlit against a soft, luminous white and pale-gray gradient sky.

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."
