Parking reform works best when it solves problems people already care about: Housing. Small business. Downtowns. Adaptive reuse. Transportation choice. Public space. Have a recent local parking reform win? We want to hear about it.

Before building more parking, ask: Where is demand highest? When are spaces full? Who needs the curb? Are nearby spaces unused? Could better management help? Good parking policy starts by understanding the problem before prescribing the answer.

Good. Too often we give pablum about getting people to take alternative methods other than driving, but the number one way we do that is appropriately cost options. If you keep parking free or cheap, people will avail themselves of it. They are acting rationally unless you change the equation

To figure out how many vehicles Americans actually want, and what types of vehicles, we should abolish minimum parking mandate nationwide. Because we lack a free market for automobile storage, we cannot determine what Americans would freely choose.
A PowerPoint slide titled "minimum parking mandates increase automobile ownership, traffic and pollution." The slide reads: "University of California scholar surveyed residents of 2654 homes and 197 San Francisco project. Residents had been randomly assigned to homes with or without on-site parking. They concluded: "residences with more on-site parking induce more automobile ownership.
Buildings with at least one parking space per unit have more than twice the car ownership rate of buildings that have no parking."

I think people would be less likely to buy large vehicles if it was a huge pain in the ass to drive them here, especially in cities. Higher gas prices are part of it. But there should be extra fees and taxes based on weight. Parking your giant Suburban should be incredibly difficult. etc.

Staples Rezoning: Results
STATEMENT FROM COUNCIL MEMBER
KAYLA SANTOSUOSSO
For the last several months I have been in negotiations with the developers for the Staples property. While this is likely one of the last rezoning votes I can make in Bay Ridge, negotiations were still heavily shaped by the charter changes that take effect in January.
The developers made clear that if the Council did not approve a modified project, they would take advantage of the new rules to resubmit at their original building - or an even bigger, denser building - for expedited approval and with no wins for our community.Staples Rezoning: Results

If you are wondering what progressive policy reforms actually increase housing supply, here are three to get you started: 1️⃣ Charge the right prices for curb parking. 2️⃣ Return the parking revenue to the blocks where it is generated, to pay for public services. 3️⃣ Remove minimum parking regulations.

This is the way. Passing something called "rent control" is extremely politically popular. Channel that popularity into good, non-harmful policy with an anti-gouging law that allows modest increases, stability for existing tenants, and a reset to market rate when tenant leaves (vacancy decontrol).
