I'm very happy to share that on July 8th I successfully defended my PhD at the EUI. My dissertation studies how social divisions become politically consequential: how actors construct identities, deploy them in conflict, and govern through them, across three historical settings.

We have a new paper out in PNAS. Susanna’s thread outlines our findings. The big picture takeaway is that well-designed climate education (active, personally relevant, science-based) can complement fiscal and regulatory instruments by building public support for ambitious policy!

This is an impressive project. My reaction to what it shows though is that survey experiments have gotten out of hand in polisci. I will blog more on this, but I do not think survey experiments are emblematic of the credibility revolution. Some are already interpreting as such, which is a problem.

A hidden gem for PolSci in an Econ journal: mainstream right-wing parties seem to capture only a fraction (!) of the far-right vote when the latter don't run in an election. Crucially, left parties seem to gain votes! A key finding for understanding potential coalitions doi.org/10.1016/j.jp...

I personally think this is a "harder problem" than we care to admit. So, are you a (social) scientist struggling with this situation? A break between what you _want_ to study (a causal process) and what you feel you _can_ credibly study (a correlation)? Here are some readings that might help. 👇

Shout it from the rooftops
Calls for abstention are not ideologically neutral. They are strategic. Italy’s referendum mechanism includes a quorum: for a referendum to be valid, more than 50% of eligible voters must participate. Therefore, encouraging people to stay home effectively sabotages the vote, not by contesting the proposals themselves, but by rendering them institutionally invisible.

This tactic is deeply problematic in a country whose Constitution begins by declaring that the Republic is “founded on labour”. When citizens are invited to vote on rights central to that founding principle, the governing coalition’s call for disengagement cannot be brushed aside as a tactical choice. It strikes at the core of democratic accountability.
