Social democrats are fans of Keynesian economics which does not hold a view that the rich get rich by making people poor. Many of Mamdani's policies involve some kind of business stimulus--cutting regulations on small businesses for example. Increasing ease of carts. So the picture is not apt.

A bit lateral, but the success stories of right-wing populists across the 'developed world' are much older than 2016 - that was just the watershed year for the Anglosphere. In some countries they got into power as early as in the 90s.

Production, purchasing power, wealth and economic power are moving east. We, especially in Europe, will get poorer. Can we manage that process with a degree of generosity? I fear not, can we help the Orient learn from our mistakes? Unlikely. But, still…Merry Christmas! 😊

I'm not convinced that noticing that all the gains from recent growth have gone to the already wealthy makes you zero-sum or anti-growth. You can still have growth while paying decent wages.

It's hard not to bristle at the conflation of right wing zero sum "the immigrants have taken all our money" with left wing zero sum "the rich have taken all our money", when only one of those groups is currently sitting on a colossal pile of newly-acquired money.

One underrated concept in economy is "utility". There are many ways to define it, but everyone agrees that marginal utility decrease with total income: having 10k$ more will change your life if you make 30k$/year, it won't if you make 300 k$/year.

Nice idea until you see the usual handicap: focus in just our (Western, developed) bellybutton, again. Same happens in developing, growing countries (India, China, Brazil until recently...). Everything hints to a global trend. Is it just political - or unsustainable growth hitting obvious excess?

It's more that the dominant companies have shifted from actually growing to pretending to grow while actually enshittifying, and inflating bubbles instead. Looking at aggregate growth is insufficient when most people are not experiencing it, and only rent-seekers are.

When money is created it is backed by an equal amount of debt, correct? Therefor credit + debt = 0. Money is a Zero Sum Game. If the rich get richer the poor get poorer. How can there be an upward economic conveyor belt?
