I feel like there's a cohort of us who got on the internet before "social media" and made all sorts of healthy friendships through forums or livejournal or what have you and thus, while everyone's like SOCIAL MEDIA FUELS COMPARISON AND MISERY we're like, but that's just where my friends live.

Back from a good walk on Dartmoor. Wanted to see how long it took to do Haytor Rocks to Hound Tor. AllTrails said 2h30m, I did it in 3h with stops. Looked more daunting than it was. Very pleased.

I'm kinda fully over that "the British conquered the world for spices and don't use any of them" joke because for one, you cannot recycle material for 5 straight generations and get a laugh worth a damn but also because in order to make it you have to agree with Tommy Robinson about who is British

something extraordinary is happening on Garvaghy Road Northern Ireland. Decent minded protestants & unionists have started to come out to support the Garvaghy residents, against the Orange Order parade madness. This is truly extraordinary. quick 🧵

Week off. Yesterday lunch with mum. Today got new tyres (actually listening to the garage!) and fixed the cat stairs (wood attached to the fence that allow him to get out of the garden).

A hinge on my laptop has broken off. It wasn't working correctly for a while because a bit of it snapped. Because a while ago I had to keep opening the cover to unplug and replug the battery. It is a 5 year old Dell Inspiron. Expected better, honestly.

Just caught some clips of Burnham's speech. How long has it been since we had a serving PM with an actual, defined, programme? A set of ideas and ideals? Where you can agree or disagree but know where they stand? I'm tired and full of cynicism, but it feels like there's a glimmer of hope?

I think it is very good that the PM is being so publicly vulnerable about grieving his father. That is also a form of leadership

There will be plenty of hot takes, my sole observation at this stage is that Burnham's biggest obstacle at the next election might not directly be Reform or the Tories, but the exhausted, cynical, risk/change averse British public.

So one interesting thing about this debate - it's led people to assume Heathrow must be a nice smaller, less hub-y airport than it actually is. It's still the 7th busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic, guys! By *international* passenger traffic, it's 2nd! It's busier than Schiphol!

I can see that big business with interests in SE England might want it - but geography and environmental factors loom larger - there is no prospect of air travel becoming Green anytime soon It can never rival Schiphol which has SIX runways 4 airports serve London Heathrow/Gatwick/Stansted/Luton

A lot of the lobbying has talked about how important it is for Heathrow to be a hub aiport, and it has never been adequately explained to me why this should matter to anyone who does not own Heathrow

As an academic and journalist, I think falsifying archival records in this way is also professional malpractice. A future historian viewing a film from the archive in 2050 should know if the object they are viewing was made in 1996 or 2026. You cannot falsely catalog the latter as the former.

Three years ago we ran an interesting experiment on public attitudes to censoring content such as Fawlty Towers and Agatha Christie's most popular work. We found that, while context and detail was important, in all the cases we tested a plurality wanted a warning but not a change to be made.

The waves out at sea were up to 60 feet high (18 metres). The wind was force 12: hurricane conditions. 100mph. The Solomon Browne launched from Penlee at 8.12pm, with its crew of eight men, and headed to the Union Star. They never returned.
