25 September 1827 The Heaton Park horse races began. Held annually for a decade, the races would ‘afford a very agreeable treat to the sporting community in this neighbourhood’. In 1828, to attract a ‘more select’ crowd, spectators had to arrive on a horse or in a carriage.

Chris Williamson, wearing his traditional black, cowled robe, and carrying a scythe, turns up at the door of the Green Party.
A tweet from former Labour MP, Chris Williamson, who was, until this tweet, the deputy leader of the Workers Party of Britain - a position traditionally given to anybody who could stomach George Galloway - announcing that he's resigned from the party and is supporting the Greens in Holborn & St Pancras.
This is because he believes the left must unite to defeat Labour, Reform, the Conservatives, and the Lib Dems (in that order of priority?) as they are all, "in the pocket of the neoliberal Zionist war machine."
Good news, he agrees with Zack on creating magic money to make everyone richer, legalising drugs, and doing <indistinct mumbling> with illegal immigration and the criminal justice system.
He disagrees with them on being pro-EU and pro-NATO, but no doubt he'll find some friends in the Greens and they'll get on with doing what they do best; fighting other members of their own party.

Look, I know I’m supposed to be at least a Slightly Serious Musician, and some of his music is staggeringly good, but every time I conduct anything by Britten my cheap mind goes to this
The Viz comic’s “Benjamin Britten and his embittered bittern”. Sorry, it’s a 22-panel comic with a lot of text, so I’m afraid that’s all you’re getting. But I hope you get the idea.

Quick feminist analysis. Q: Does the motion acknowledge women's legal & human rights to equality? A: No. Q. Does the motion benefit males or females? A: Primarily males at the expense of females. Conclusion: motion reinforces power relations between the sexes. This is patriarchy.

Sad to hear Ed Davey peddling this. The *overall* tax take in the UK is historically high, but taxes on low/medium earners are low by historical standards & among the lowest in the G7. The cost of living crisis is not due to high personal taxes. Pretending it is just does the Right's work for it.

OMG I'm so bored of the "this is two-tier justice!" whining today. That the police didn't go in & break skulls like it's 1970s Belfast doesn't make it OK to demonstrate in favour of a proscribed terrorist organisation. More than one thing can be wrong at the same time. Arrests often follow. GROW UP.

For #RomanSiteSaturday let's go to a huge pile of #trash - Monte Testaccio in #Rome. A huge artificial hill located next to the Tiber River. It was made up of millions of broken amphorae (mostly oil amphorae from southern Spain) during the first three centuries AD www.elnacional.cat/es/cultura/r...
A vast accumulation of broken amphorae pieces, stacked in a cascading formation. The scene has an earthy color palette, with shades of brown, beige, and gray. Light filters in from above, illuminating the top of the pile, while the lower sections remain in shadow.
