apropos of previous thread by John Wiswell: writers have a lot of solidarity when it comes to contracts. if you are a new writer and you think something might be hinky about your contract, it is completely fine to ask other professional writers even (especially) if you don't know us.

There are no lines left. And if people seriously looked into the details of Nazis and other European fascist regimes, they'd learn the monsters they are waiting for us to become were actually inspired by America to begin with. From Jim Crow to indigenous genocide, America was always the model.

I have been a guest at conventions where, during the pre-con walk through, my handler has pointed out the bar and mentioned how some guests are "more fun" and "get asked back," then names only men. Because a lot of female guests aren't comfortable hanging out around alcohol with strangers.

As anyone in publishing will tell you, women do not resist reading books by men, but men will often dismiss books by women. This is not a publishing problem or a failure to target men. It's a misogyny problem.

If the baseline argument is young men are just unevolved gorillas, which is what the defense of those men boils down to, why aren't more men offended at being likened to animals. You're cool with that? You're SELF LABELING with that? Okay. Why are unevolved gorillas in charge and not in zoos.

Ten years of relentlessly hateful, comically elitist anti-democratic politics across the white people world, helpfully summarised. The wrong people are talking, the wrong people are deciding and it’s harming the careers of important people who actually matter. Smithers! Release the hounds
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.

It's easier to hyperfixate on this one detail about Gen Z workers instead of on how corporations are using performance improvement plans to force out employees without severance; how return to office policies hurt parents, caregivers, and disabled workers; and how hard it is to find a job right now.

I think the "debate" about bringing iced coffee to job interviews is effective at distracting people from the really bad job market, the high unemployment rate for Black women, ongoing mass layoffs in tech and media, and how Gen Z workers are refusing to adopt many toxic aspects of corp work culture

Laundry then: Get the water, scrub the clothes (hell on the hands), periodically replace the dirty water, keep scrubbing, run through a mangle, hang up to dry. Time spent, hours on hours. Now: Toss in the machine, choose detergent, eat a sandwich. Machine dings. Toss in dryer. Eat another sandwich
