Resonant, painful essay about the way internalized ableism even more than Long Covid threatened this person’s marriage. I really admire the work he’s done to get out of that destructive mindset and to a place of acceptance. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2025/01/31/s...

You may think that neurological symptoms in #LongCovid are for old people, but it is the opposite. Young adults (18–44 years) and middle-aged (45–64 years) with mild acute #COVID cases (non-hospitalized), represent 90% of the cases of #NeuroCovid. Read here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Screenshot of the study published yesterday Annals of Neurology. Title: Neurologic Manifestations of Long COVID Disproportionately Affect Young and Middle-Age Adults. Interpretation: Younger and middle-age individuals are disproportionally affected by post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (Neuro-PASC) regardless of acute COVID-19 severity. Although older people more frequently have abnormal neurologic findings and comorbidities, younger and middle-age patients suffer from a higher burden of Neuro-PASC symptoms and cognitive dysfunction contributing to decreased QoL. Neuro-PASC principally affects adults in their prime, contributing to profound public health and socioeconomic impacts warranting dedicated resources for prevention, diagnosis and interventions. I agree. It at least says that filtering fibrinogen and inflammatory molecules from the plasma can be helpful in the short term. But without addressing the upstream problem l, it's just a band-aid. One that I would absolutely accept, though, if it were available and affordable.

THE SICK TIMES: Two new studies increase our understanding of the consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy. One study found that maternal COVID-19 increases the incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders in children. “Our findings support a model where the maternal COVID-19 infection changed the levels of CD4 proliferating T cells, leading to the alterations of astrocytes, endothelial cells, and excitatory neurons in offspring,” the authors wrote.

Another study found an increased risk of fetal situs inversus, a congenital heart abnormality, after SARS-C0V-2 infection during the early weeks of pregnancy (4-6 weeks).THE SICK TIMES: More evidence has emerged that COVID-19 can trigger autoimmune diseases. A retrospective cohort study of nearly seven million people concluded that COVID-19 increased the risk and incidence of autoimmune and autoinflammatory connective tissue disorders, including Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Sjögren’s. Severe COVID-19 and being unvaccinated increased the risk.
THE SICK TIMES: A Mount Sinai CoRe clinical trial has just started recruiting to test the fibrinolytic enzyme, Lumbrokinase. The trial is currently recruiting people with Long COVID, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), and Lyme to test the brand Boluoke®’s supplement daily for six weeks at 300,000 functional units (FUs.)

The study is based in New York City; to inquire about enrolling contact: CoreResearch@mountsinai.org. You can find more clinical trials at LongCovidStudies.net.
