it's not advocacy journalism to give your readers the proper context to judge the words of your sources. it used to be a basic function that all journalists were supposed to practice and it is just not there consistently from Times news reporters covering trans issues.

This is really despicable and I’m reminded of all the LGBTQ influencers I’ve seen promote Chili’s triple dippers and pink glitter martinis and mozzarella sticks all over TikTok and Instagram Reels. They need queer and trans people for marketing, while discriminating against them as employees

While working on this piece, I couldn't forget the wave of harassment trans journalists got here mid-2024 when we spoke up about the NYT's transphobia and the complicity of major figures there. We need a lot less reverence for institutions, and a lot more listening to folks on the front lines.

"I can't believe The New York Times did this" Trans kids? Claudine Gay? Gaza? At some point we have to stop being surprised. The right sees the Times as a vehicle for laundering its conspiracy theories and injecting it into elite America and the Times is very happy to oblige them.
