Amazing hotel rate. You could probably get a luxury Uber to central London and stay at the Dorchester for the night for less than this. (Theoretically, airlines have to cover this for stranded passengers, but imagine laying your credit card down for this on the hope that BA refund you...sometime?)

See this chart? Workers’ share of the nation’s income is at the lowest it’s been since records began in 1947. Corporate profits’ share, on the other hand, is the highest it’s been since 1950. This is why we must build back worker power.

Stars and Stripes staffers sue The Pentagon.
Stars and Stripes Journalists Sue Pentagon to Halt Retaliatory Firings
Lawsuit alleges Pentagon is firing journalists defending editorial independence, seeks emergency stay from court
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Democracy Defenders Fund, Lawyers for Good Government, Government Accountability Project and the Yale School Media Freedom and Information Access Clinic today filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of Stars and Stripes publisher Max Lederer, editor-in-chief Erik Slavin and reporter Lara Korte seeking to stop the Department of Defense from firing them.
The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, alleges that Slavin and Korte have been charged with insubordination for speaking publicly in support of Stars and Stripes' long-standing editorial independence when covering the Pentagon. Lederer has been charged with insubordination for speaking publicly about his personal concerns with the direction and leadership of Stars and Stripes, and for refusing to fire Slavin and Korte. The lawsuit alleges that the Pentagon's actions violate the First Amendment and its own personnel rules and asks the court to issue an immediate temporary restraining order to block the terminations from going through.
Slavin and Korte are being fired merely for saying on the CBS Sunday Morning TV show that Stars and Stripes should remain independent of Pentagon and political influence. The firings were initiated the day after Stars and Stripes broke the story about the dire conditions on the USS
Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.

I was today years old when I learned Dolly Parton recorded Woody Guthrie's song "Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)" in 1980. It's a heartbreaking song about immigration and specifically deportation plane that crashed in 1948 killing dozens of Mexican "bracero" workers. Her version is beautiful💔

My personal favourite is still the one about the difference between a sauce and a dressing:
Screenshot from a hilariously off-target google AI overview about the difference between sauces and dressings.
“The main difference between a sauce and a dressing is their purpose: sauces add flavor and texture to dishes, while dressings are used to protect wounds.
Sauces: add flavor, texture and visual appeal to dishes. Sauces can also add contrasting or complementary flavors and colors to a plate. For example, tomato sauce is a common base for Mexican salsas and Italian pasta dishes.
Dressings: used to protect wounds and prevent infection, while also allowing healing. A dressing should be large enough to completely cover the wound, with a safety margin of about 2.5cm on all sides. A standard serving size for salad dressing is two tablespoons.”

Trump administration admits, in court filings, that it canceled billions in federal grants not for policy or performance reasons, but because recipients lived in blue states. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/24/b...
Months later, in court filings, federal officials indicated there was little else that had informed the final decision about which grants to cancel.

“With one exception,” a lawyer for the Energy Department conceded in a court filing this month, “the 284 terminated grants had a recipient location and/or at least one place of performance in a state that awarded its electoral votes to Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and has two Democratic-caucusing senators.”

The lawyer acknowledged that none of the grants were included in the October terminations “based on any programmatic, statutory, cost-reduction or performance-based factor.”

In contrast, the administration left untouched hundreds of additional energy grants in states that were represented by Republicans and had backed Mr. Trump in the last election, even though the Energy Department had recommended canceling them, the government confirmed in the July court filing.

The cancellations coincided with a broader White House effort at the time to pressure Democratic lawmakers to cave in a fight over funding that had shut down the government. That month, Mr. Trump had vocalized the strategy: He threatened openly to slash what he described as “Democrat agencies,” while Mr. Vought announced a series of additional spending cuts targeting other Democratic-led states.

There it is. #CCCC #NCTE
Email from NCTE Executive Committee acknowledging messages received and the following:

For many years, the Conference on College Composition & Communication (CCCC) played a critical role in serving the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) & its mission. In recent years, however, CCCC has struggled with its fiscal sustainability, declining participation, & governance challenges. As a result, earlier today the Executive Committee of NCTE made the difficult decision to de-charter its special topics conference CCCC. To clarify, today’s decision to de-charter does not mean that NCTE has altered its commitment to supporting teachers at the college and university level. This is exemplified by the fact that the NCTE College Section is thriving. The process in making this decision spanned several years, with attempts to work collaboratively with CCCC’s executive committees across multiple iterations. While the organization appreciates the years of collaboration with CCCC, after deep evaluation and thoughtful consideration, the Executive Committee concluded this step was necessary to more effectively serve the college English and writing and composition community and NCTE membership as a whole.

Although this has been a very difficult decision, we are excited about the future. This change will allow us to provide better support to the college English and writing and composition community. In the coming days and weeks, we will be working hard to make this transition as smooth as possible. We thank CCCC, its leaders, and its members for its many years of contributions and look forward to continuing to involve the composition, rhetoric, and writing communities as we move forward. NCTE remains devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. As future planning takes place, NCTE will communicate updates.

A transition team focused on supporting composition, rhetoric, & writing studies will be named imminently.
