I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you.
A note on the TLS website saying that an essay entiled 'AI and the crisi of the author' by Anchit Sathi has been removed because AI 'was used in its preparation'. TLS editorial guidlines prohibit the use of AI in writing and editing, although the author states that he was unaware of the policy.

In "Modern Fiction", Woolf raves about Chekhov's story "Gusev" ("as the eyes accustom themselves to twilight and discern the shapes of things in a room we see how complete the story is, how profound"). And she's right, it's an absolute banger. With the most absurd and moving death in all literature.
Gusev goes back to the sick bay and lies down on his cot. As before he suffers from some vague yearning, and he cannot figure out what he wants. There is a weight on his chest, a throbbing in his head, his mouth is so dry that he can hardly move his tongue. He dozes and mutters and, tormented by nightmares, coughing, and stuffiness, falls fast asleep towards morning. He dreams that they have just taken the bread out of the oven in the barracks, and he gets into the oven and has a steambath, lashing himself with birch branches. He sleeps for two days, and on the third day two sailors come from topside and carry him out of the sick bay. He is sewn up in canvas and, to weight him down, two iron bars are put in with him. Sewn up in canvas, he comes to resemble a carrot or a black radish, wide at the head, narrow towards the foot. . . Before sunset he is taken out on deck and laid on a plank; one end of the plank rests on the rail, the other on a box placed on a stool. Discharged soldiers and the ship's crew stand around him with their hats off.

An AI slop account on Facebook called "English Literature Gems" posted this version of "In a Station of the Metro" with new hallucinated lines (and breathtaking rhymes)
In a Station of the Metro
Ezra Pound

The apparition of these faces in the crowd;
Petals on a wet, black bough.

These faces that I see
Inspire me with the desire
Of tender smiles that I may never see.

Not one of all the women that I see
Will interest me.

No, not one of all the millions
Will interest me.

And in the midst of this
I feel there is not one
To whom I can turn.

For these I have seen
Faces that I dream of all my life,
Faces that haunt me when I close my eyes.

Uncanny that Mary Shelley, at 18, knew how hard it was for adult men to make a new friend
… I greatly need a friend who would have sense enough not to despise me as romantic, and affection enough for me to endeavor to regulate my mind.
Well, these are useless complaints; I shall certainly find no friend on the wide ocean, nor even here in Archangel, among merchants and seamen.

How to spot a villain in Proust: when they think Debussy is bad
From Sodom et Gomorrhe (trans. Moncrieff): "even in the presence of the narrowest of provincial ladies she could not remain for five minutes without feeling the need to confess them. When a noble dame of Avranches, who would have been incapable of distinguishing between Mozart and Wagner, said in Mme. de Cambremer's hearing: "We saw nothing of any interest while we were in Paris, we went once to the Opéra-Comique, they were doing Pelléas et Mélisande, it's dreadful stuff," Mme. de Cambremer not only boiled with rage but felt obliged to exclaim: "Not at all, it's a little gem," and to 'argue the point.' It was perhaps a Combray habit which she had picked up from my grandmother's sisters, who called it 'fighting in the good cause,' and loved the dinner-parties at which they knew all through the week that they would have to defend their idols against the Philistines."

The mid-80s were the salad days of oboes in pop culture. The Dream Academy and The Go-Betweens had full-time oboists; Madonna and A-ha were dabbling. Teens wore double reeds as accessories on silver chains. Parents named their children after Léon Goossens. Quite a time.

Coleridge imagining British imperialism as a cloud of pestilence (from "Fears In Solitude. Written In April, 1798, During The Alarm Of An Invasion")
Even now, perchance, and in his native isle:
Carnage and groans beneath this blessed sun!
We have offended, oh! my countrymen!
We have offended very grievously,
And been most tyrannous. From east to west
A groan of accusation pierces Heaven!
The wretched plead against us; multitudes
Countless and vehement, the sons of God,
Our brethren! Like a cloud that travels on,
Steamed up from Cairo's swamps of pestilence,
Even so, my countrymen! have we gone forth
And borne to distant tribes slavery and pangs,
And, deadlier far, our vices, whose deep taint
With slow perdition murders the whole man,
His body and his soul!

The sheer depravity of this — whatever has been or will be done to the statues of Lachlan Macquarie — it will never be enough. From Barry Corr's Surveying the Wild Abyss (2026)
The final enactment of Macquarie's triumph took place in the yard of St John's church at Parramatta on 28 December 1816. The Gazette provided a particularly unctuous account of this pioneering model of social engineering. The structure of the feast revolved around gender, hierarchies and a free meal. Aboriginal people, broken into subjects and chiefs, formed a passive foil to the Governor and his entourage. These divisions were reinforced with the awarding of brass plates to the 'chiefs' and presents to the various guides. Mrs Macquarie played an appropriate second fiddle to her husband, arriving to see the stolen and hostage children from the Native Institution paraded before the 'chiefs'. The Governor and his wife were no doubt suitably touched by the tears of Aboriginal women 'at seeing the infant and helpless offspring of their deceased friends, so happily sheltered and protected by British benevolence'.

It’s weird that “krautrock” is still called “krautrock”
The term "krautrock" was popularised by British music journalists as a pejorative umbrella-label for the diverse German scene, 18) and although many such artists disliked the term, it subsequently fell into standard usage.

What's the theory equivalent of vibe coding
Freud writes: "Why hats and cloaks are used in the same way (ie. as sexual symbols), is certainly difficult to divine, but their symbolic meaning is certainly unquestionable." Later, in his New Introductory Lectures (5), Freud was able to add some explanatory details regarding the symbolism of cloaks, but was still, apparently, unable to cast further light on the symbolism of hats.
