The idea that people want AI oversight to happen "all of a sudden" ignores years of research, warnings, and policy efforts. The delay hasn’t been a lack of awareness; it’s been because of years of industry lobbying against regulation, political resistance, and inaction.

A little plug for Jane the Virgin, not on NYT's list at all (annoying but not surprising). It's rare to find a show that creative with genre and form and winkingly self-aware yet committed to its characters. One of the best shows of that era.

Listening to academic administrators talk about the loss of trust in academia, the need to listen to what the public want us to focus on—without any recognition that this crisis is in large part manufactured by bad faith actors.

Important evidence because nationally, including here in Ohio, legislators creating these laws sometimes deny the loss of faculty they produce. Bad news for universities, students (who also leave), and local communities.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds hits all the right beats, can be fun, character-deep, or a mind-bender. Ep. 2 this season, "The Griffin Incident," was one of my favorites so far. Masterful and formally tight generic mashup, risky foray into horror. With a killer last shot (not this one below).

Same, & resharing what I do to accommodate disabilities: pose no laptops as a 2 wks' trial. They can discontinue after if they want - & during the 2 wks, offer notes if they feel disadvantaged at all. Most continue no-laptops post-2 wks. But no one's spotlighted before or after for using a computer.

Another one about Furious. This piece gets so well why the show's so gripping. It embodies an anger, especially now in the wake of a MeToo movement that hardly went far enough, and then spilled out into the immediate backlash we're in now.

Seeing many critiques of this recent Chronicle piece this week. It fits into a genre I posted about yesterday of setting up a straw man ("go ahead and despise AI all you want"). The faculty I've worked have very nuanced concerns about AI and aren't "pretending AI does not exist" /1
Now is the time to think much more clearly about what we ask students to do and why. Simply dropping a prompt into an LLM and harvesting the results is not sufficient as either a beginning or an end to humanities work. The American Historical Association and Modern Language Association have started to articulate more detailed answers to these difficult questions, emphasizing AI literacy and the notion that “expertise must precede AI reliance.” But that leaves the hard work to each faculty member: translating their own specialized expertise into pedagogy and determining how to help students build up a foundational level of knowledge in their subject against this new background. Retreating to blue books and pretending AI does not exist is not the answer.

So go ahead and despise LLMs all you want — but recognize that your ability to catch what they get wrong is the very skill set you want to cultivate in your students. It is on you to help them build it.

I’m a Dartmouth professor. Pres. Beilock implies in this piece that she speaks for us as a college. She does not. I don’t permit AI in my classroom. Not because it stole my work; because as I wrote in @chronicle.com, most of my students hate it—and feel betrayed by the college—even more than I do.

A helpful thing I heard recently abt student AI use is that a big reason it's become so naturalized is that students think it keeps them competitive w/ peers who are using it. So I started the semester by clueing them in: it's just the opposite - students using it produce some of the poorest work.

porscha fermanis’s new book “settler fiction from the southern hemisphere “book series description

RACE IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY LITERATURES AND CULTURES
Race in Nineteenth-Century Literatures and Cultures (RNCLC) brings together critical work on the material and intellectual histories of race across the long nineteenth century. The series considers such issues as enslavement, abolition, race science, colonial expansion, and indigeneity in relation to cultural production and consumption across the globe. Focused on underexplored nineteenth-century archives, RNCLC nevertheless pays particular attention to the relevance of the period's racial formations to the contemporary moment. Titles included proceed from the conviction that understanding this key moment in the history of race enables us to imagine revolutionary alternatives to the structures inherited from the nineteenth century.
