It was my honour to accept the Career Trajectory Award from the Society for Experimental Social Psychology in Lisbon, Portugal this weekend. 💖 For the acceptance speech, I created an “Allegory for a Career Trajectory.” Thank you, to Everyone! Animated version: youtu.be/Svjw7JBddPw
This image, titled "Allegory for a Career Trajectory" depicts a forest. The trees have different colours, like a technicolor rainbow. The trees bear the names of people who influenced the development of Elizabeth Page-Gould's ideas, knowledge, abilities, and career--and certainly personal growth. There is a tree that goes sideways across the image labelled "LP-G." This tree has many names coming off it's branches, representing the incredible students whom Page-Gould has had the honour to mentor. This image served as the backdrop to Page-Gould's acceptance speech for the SESP Career Trajectory Award.

Highly esteemed Mrs. Curie,
Do not laugh at me for writing you without having anything sensible to say.
But I am so enraged by the base manner in which the public is presently daring to concern itself with you!? that I absolutely must give vent to this feeling. However, I am convinced that you consistently despise this rabble, whether it obsequiously lavishes respect on you or whether it attempts to satiate its lust for sensationalism!
I am impelled to tell you how much I have come to admire your intellect, your drive, and your honesty, and that I consider myself lucky to have made your personal acquaintance in Brussels. Anyone who does not number among these reptiles is certainly happy, now as before, that we have such personages among us as you, and Langevin(3) too, real people with whom one feels privileged to be in contact. If the rabble continues to occupy itself with you, then simply don't read that hogwash, but rather leave it to the reptile for whom i

We have tracked more than 1,532 deaths in custody across Canada since the year 2000. Faqiri was one of 85 deaths in custody in Canada that year. Deaths in custody are rarely natural, the average age of all those who have died across Canada is just 44.5 years old. ottawacitizen.com/opinion/opin...

I spoke with the Chronicle of Higher Education yesterday; they read my Brookings article and wanted to follow-up since another round of university presidents will have to testify before Congress next week. I think leaders should use this as an opportunity to stand up for higher ed. 1/4.
Next week, three more college presidents are scheduled to testify before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce at another hearing on antisemitism.

It follows two others featuring college leaders — one where the presidents seemed unprepared and one where Columbia University’s president took a pacifying approach. Another featured leaders of K-12 school districts, who were much more confrontational.

Watching this unfold, Neil A. Lewis Jr. thinks this next group of presidents— the leaders of Northwestern and Rutgers Universities and the University of California at Los Angeles — should stick up for higher ed.

Amazing: the President of the Ontario Federation of Labour says if U of T wants to raze the encampment on Monday and “move against the students, you’ll have to go through the workers first.” A solidarity rally of unions will be held at the university’s deadline of 8am Monday. ofl.ca/ofl-open-let...
This is a mandate to support the students, not repress them. In this spirit, I urge you to reverse course immediately, and choose negotiations and discussion over ultimatums and repression.

As a gesture of encouragement, I am calling on all trade unions and allies to join a solidarity rally on Monday at 8:00 a.m. at the student encampment at the University of Toronto.

If, by then, you decide to move against the students, you’ll have to go through the workers first.

Sincerely,

LAURA WALTON

what a paragraph. what a fucking paragraph.
A protester with a megaphone called out to the state police as they marched on the crowd, “Where were you in 2017?”

On Aug. 11, 2017, a day before the deadly Unite the Right rally-turned-riot in Charlottesville, a mob of torch-wielding neo-Nazis and other White supremacists marched across Grounds. Police watched on as the mob encircled a band of student protesters at the base of the statue of Thomas Jefferson in front of the university’s landmark Rotunda. Police did not declare an unlawful assembly and clear the area until after the mob began brandishing their torches at protesters and assaulting students. At the time, the mob’s activities were permitted by the university as an act of free expression.
