A nobody, a neighbor. Public service message: If you don’t pronounce the T in “soften” or “listen,” you shouldn’t pronounce it in “often,” and you definitely shouldn’t act self-satisfied while doing it. It does not actually make you sound posh or elite.

The far right power grab is global and entirely organized, moneyed & interconnected. No matter where it happens, every pillar of free society that falls has been and will continue to be everyone’s problem. It’s a domino effect.

Hey everyone, I have an equation that has the potential to impact the future! It’s eix = cos(x) + i * sin(x)*AI, which is Euler’s identity BUT with the added exponential power of AI to revolutionize science, arts, philosophy, age of consent laws, and other areas essential to human progress.

That anyone in 2026 America would consider this a serious, reasoned, morally sound proposition is shameful. it would have been a dubious tactic in the Obama years; today it’s both absurd and dangerous — especially for people whose moral and legal standing as human beings is the topic of ”debate.”

I believe tech CEOs should accept some bad things happening to them for the benefit of humanity, and that they should count themselves lucky if all this entails is the loss of their wealth.

this is by far the best "I quit my AI job over safety concerns" essay yet because it is the first one that is able to talk about safety concerns in practical terms and that understands "safety" as a topic with extensive literature in analogous fields www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
Two changes are urgently needed. First: AI companies need to rely more on the safety expertise that already exists in other fields. And second, before we create systems significantly more capable than the ones we have today, we need new science to ensure that more capable models (and their successors) will make safe choices when we aren’t looking.

Given today’s risks, frontier labs need to run like nuclear-power plants or busy airports, with layers of redundancy and careful, time-consuming planning, so that the occasional and inevitable human error does not open a door to disaster. Right now, AI companies don’t know how—but other people do. In a nuclear-power plant, the technical systems and rules people follow are set up so that, if equipment breaks or someone pushes the wrong button, we still won’t risk a meltdown. OpenAI and other labs are growing and deploying frontier AI with far less redundancy and rigor than this, even though the harm from an irreversible loss of control would be much greater than the harm from any single meltdown. Even short of a full loss of control, we could see autonomous swarms of AI agents that act without human permission. Imagine “rogue” agents that work like teams of hackers (for example, holding hospital computer systems for ransom) but never need to sleep.

We need to rephrase the whole discussion in terms of hazardous products, instead of "minds". And then we need to make sure that there's liability. A model hacks someone? Put a C-suite guy in jail. A model produces sexual harassment material? Put a C-suite guy in jail. Watch how fast things get safe

Apart from everything else that’s wrong with them, racists are outlandishly stupid and they also lack even the faintest awareness of that impediment to being taken seriously by anyone who doesn’t have the same cognitive deficits. Bubbles don’t get much more self-limiting.

And Paxton thinks 60 days in the country club prison for rich GOP Texans was sufficient penalty for raping a child for three years? Come on Texas, kick the Paxton trash to the curb in Nov.
