Does the Universe expand faster than the speed of light? The Universe is expanding, and ever more distant objects appear to recede faster and faster. At some point, they exceed the speed of light. And yet, relativity is just fine with that. bigthink.com/starts-with-... #space #astro #relativity

Does the Universe expand faster than the speed of light?
Just 13.8 billion years after the hot Big Bang, we can see 46.1 billion light-years away in all directions. Doesn't that violate something?

This 2-panel HOO mosaic took awhile! The Flying Bat Nebula (Sh2-129) and The Squid Nebula (OU4). The very faint OU4 was discovered by amateur Nicolas Outters in 2011. Triple hypergiant star system HR8119 (center) energizes the bipolar outflow of oxygen to glow blue. #astrophotography Details in ALT.
a red emission nebula looks like a flying bat. between the wings is a squid shaped blue emission nebula. Image created from the best 245 of 352 5-min exposures through h-alpha and O II filters taken with a Takahashi TSA-120 with a 0.7x reducer and ZWO ASI2600MM camera. The largest photomosaic of the Andromeda galaxy, assembled from Hubble observations, took more than 10 years of data collecting and was created from more than 600 snapshots! ➡️ And it's available for download in really large sizes: go.nasa.gov/44Uvyhc 🔭 🧪
The Andromeda galaxy, a spiral galaxy, spreads across the width. It is tilted nearly edge-on to our line of sight so that it appears as an extreme oval on its side. The borders of the galaxy are jagged because the image is a mosaic of smaller, square images. The outer edges of the galaxy are blue, while the inner two-thirds are yellowish with a bright, central core. Dark, dusty filamentary clouds wrap around the outer half of the galaxy’s disk. At 10 o’clock, a smaller dwarf elliptical galaxy forms a fuzzy, yellow blob. Hubble’s sharp vision distinguishes about 200 million stars within the image. The background of space is black. There are what appears to be steps toward the bottom, mainly toward the middle, which indicates where no data were taken.

🧵 To celebrate its 3rd Anniversary, the JWST released this stunning image of the Cat's Paw Nebula (NGC 6334), a massive star-forming region located about 4,000 ly away in Scorpius. ➡️ esawebb.org/news/weic2513/ Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI 🔭 🧪 #Science #universe #space
The JWST image shows a portion of the Cat's Paw Nebula, a star-forming region 4,000 light-years away. In the center, four circular areas resemble paw pads: a small oval at the upper left, a large central circle ("Opera House"), and two ovals at the bottom. They emit a bluish glow, brightest at the center and lower left, due to the light of massive stars. Brown-orange filaments of dust, of varying density, extend at the edges. Dark areas near the central circle appear devoid of stars, blocked by dense dust. Red clumps in the center indicate stars in formation. Yellow-white stars with eight-pointed spikes and a few larger blue-white stars dot the scene. At the upper right, a dense red-orange oval marks the beginning of star formation. A bright arc at the lower left reveals gas ejection. The image is a mosaic of blues, browns, and reds, twinkling stars.

A very vertical image of a tall, thin portion of a nebula that appears to stand like a tree. The top is made up of large brown and blue pale clouds and dust that look like voluminous hair. To the right of the clouds is a dark rugged shape, surrounded by a bright red light. Below the clouds is a dark stem, made of tendrils of dust, wrapping around themselves to the bottom of the image, where the tendrils widen and expand like a tornado-like dust cloud. The background has several stars of different colors and sizes, and the shade of the background changes from light blue at top to dark red at the bottom.

🧵 Here is a #Hubble gem! The image features Z 229-15, one of the most interesting cosmic objects due to its multifaceted nature. In fact, it's defined as a ring galaxy, as an active galactic nucleus (AGN), as a quasar, and as a Seyfert galaxy...all at once. ➡️ science.nasa.gov/missions/hub... 🔭 🧪
This image shows Z 229-15, an active galaxy located in the constellation of Lyra. At its center, an extremely bright, intensely white nucleus dominates the scene like a brilliant beacon. This nucleus, a quasar, appears almost blinding, emitting a powerful light that appears to pulsate. Around the nucleus, the galaxy extends in an elliptical shape, with barely visible spiral arms, visible as fainter streaks. These arms are a bluish-gray color, dotted with lighter spots, perhaps stars or regions of star formation, that add texture. The background is a deep black, typical of space, which makes the central brightness and the soft details of the galaxy stand out even more.
To the right and slightly above the image, there is a bright object with "spikes", most likely a foreground star, that is, a star closer to Earth than the galaxy. Visually, the object is a bright, white point surrounded by a bluish halo.
