A week in the life of Gemini North! 🔭 Check out some of the gorgeous targets we pointed at between 09-20-2026 and 09-27-2026. #Astronomy
A 3x3 grid of nine images captured by the Gemini North telescope between September 20 and 27, 2026. A legend at the top indicates the instruments used: GMOS-N (yellow), GNIRS (blue), and IGRINS-2 (red). The grid showcases various deep-space targets against black backgrounds. The images include dense, glittering star clusters, scattered starfields, bright stars with distinct cross-shaped diffraction spikes, and distant glowing galaxies. Each panel is labeled with the corresponding instrument in the bottom-left corner: four images were taken by GNIRS, three by IGRINS-2, and two by GMOS-N.

This week’s image is of NGC 7253! Captured by Gemini’s GMOS-N, this dramatic scene between the two galaxies is also known as Nā ʻUhane Māhoe Huki Pū i ke Ola (“The twin spirits pulling together creating life”). Check out the 🧵 for another paper. #Astronomy 📸 in thread
An image of NGC 7253, a pair of interacting spiral galaxies set against a dark background scattered with distant stars and galaxies. The galaxy on the left is angled slightly, displaying a bright, glowing core and sprawling spiral arms heavily dotted with bright pink and blue regions of star formation. The galaxy on the right is viewed nearly edge-on, looking like an elongated, warped streak of light stretching toward the first galaxy. A luminous haze of gas, dust, and stars appears to connect the two structures, illustrating the intense gravitational pull between them.

This week’s image is of the CK Vulpeculae nebula! This spectacular image was taken with Gemini’s GMOS-N and captures not only the red arcs of outwardly expanding gas but also the blue-white core. Check out the 🧵 for another paper. #Astronomy 📸 in thread
An image of the CK Vulpeculae nebula set against a dense, dark background heavily populated with stars. The nebula features a glowing bluish-white central region, surrounded by hourglass-shaped lobes of reddish-orange gas expanding outward. Further out from the bright center are two faint, small reddish arcs of gas, one located towards the top and the other towards the bottom of the nebula's structure. The surrounding starfield contains stars of varying sizes and brightness, appearing as white, light blue, and orange pinpricks of light.

Thanks to the efforts of our Engineering (and other) teams, Gemini South is going back to the sky tonight (Sep 15th) after the largest and most impactful winter storm to hit Chile since 1954! Let's hope for great weather and a safe return to operations! #astronomy
This image of the Gemini South telescope is so bright that it is hard to believe it was captured at night. Gemini South is the southern half of the international Gemini Observatory, a Program of NSF NOIRLab. The wedge-shaped light on the right side of the photo is not from an artificial source (although there are city lights below it), but is a natural phenomenon known as zodiacal light. This occurs when sunlight scatters off dust particles in the plane of our Solar System, illuminating part of the sky after sundown or before sunrise. The zodiac is a belt-shaped region of the sky, as seen from Earth, and the apparent path of the planets. Gemini Observatory is named after one section of the zodiacal belt: Gemini, the constellation of the Twins.

The Anglerfish Cluster. This galaxy cluster is so massive that its gravity warps space-time, turning it into a natural cosmic lens. Hubble saw only part of it; Gemini North revealed the rest. #astronomy

A deep space image of the Anglerfish galaxy cluster captured by the Gemini North telescope. Set against a vast black background, the densely packed field contains hundreds of glowing objects. Several intensely bright blue stars stand out with distinct, cross-shaped diffraction spikes, surrounded by many soft, yellowish-orange elliptical galaxies. Numerous fainter, distant galaxies of varying shapes and subtle hues of white, blue, and red are scattered throughout the cluster.

This week’s image is of NGC 1058! Observed using Gemini’s GMOS-N, this famous galaxy defies its 'quiescent' classification with a history of starburst activity and three known supernovae. Check out the 🧵 for another paper! #Astronomy 📸 in thread
A deep-space image of the spiral galaxy NGC 1058 centered against a dark background dotted with numerous stars. The galaxy features a luminous, bright yellowish-white core. Its sweeping spiral arms are intricately detailed, showcasing glowing pink regions of active star formation mixed with bright blue star clusters. In the lower-left quadrant of the image, a prominent, bright blue star with distinct cross-shaped diffraction spikes shines clearly. The surrounding blackness of space is peppered with faint, distant galaxies and stars of varying sizes and colors.

Six Hawaiʻi Island students helped bring a new Gemini North image to life! They selected the interacting galaxies NGC 7253 and gave them this Hawaiian name: Nā ʻUhane Māhoe Huki Pū i ke Ola, “The Twin Spirits Pulling Together Creating Life” #astronomy 📷 Gemini Observatory/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA
An astronomical image captured by Gemini North showing NGC 7253, a pair of colliding spiral galaxies set against a dark background filled with distant stars and smaller, faint galaxies.

The two galaxies are actively merging near the center of the frame, their structures distorted into sweeping, swooping loops of glowing pale blue and gray gas. Intricate dark dust lanes, along with glowing reddish-orange star-forming regions, trace through the core where the galaxies overlap. Several bright foreground stars with distinct, sharp blue diffraction spikes stand out around the merging pair.
