from a real-world standpoint it's obvious untenable and unacceptable and incredibly obscenely immoral -- but also from a theoretical pov, from a Weberian pov, what the fuck is the US government if this one guy, who is not elected and not in the gov't, is making these kinds of decisions?

Bad that one person has enough wealth to fund Republicans better than millions of grassroots donors can fund Democrats. Worse that that person is (1) defense contractor who will get his money back with contracts (2) white supremacist who will also be "rewarded" with gov't violence towards minorities

If Trump did Watergate, it wouldn't even make the top 10 traumas he has inflicted on the Americans on a given Tuesday. He has done so much more damage to our institutions then 9/11 did. What a bubble that strategist must live in!

Trump v. US and Trump v. Anderson fundamentally destroyed all credibility the Court has to the claim that it defends constitutional government. I think a reason that Law Brain rears its ugly head so much on this question - that is, otherwise reasonable lawyers and legal scholars acting like you are

Average hourly earnings, adjusted for inflation, fell 0.5 percent in September and are now back to where they were in January, 2025. That means that Americans, on average, have experienced zero real wage growth since Trump returned to office.

This should set off a siren in every defence ministry in Europe: there needs to be much more urgency about developing autonomous capabilities, not subject to US caprices, for early warning of attacks, countering ballistic missiles, communicating with forces or controlling offensive weapons.

Also it’s time for the news to stop treating this administration’s racist war against Somalis as “Trump being Trump.” They targeted Minneapolis because they hate an ethnic group here, and now they’re targeting the most prominent political figure in that group with thinly rationalized state violence.

just a casual reminder that inciting violence against his political opponents and others he dislikes has been a core feature of Donald Trump's approach for more than a decade. It is a defining characteristic of Trump and his movement, but rarely centered as such by corporate media.

More to the point — people who stayed on the platform don't realize how inured to extremism they've become. They regularly get exposed to trending topics, and amplified content from verified accounts, that they would have recoiled from just a few years ago. I don't miss anything *not* being there.

Over the last decade, there were two hypotheses: H1: the political right genuinely cared about threats to speech from the left. H2: they were using campus speech wars to impose their values and silence dissent. Today, the answer is clear, but I can't find any of the H1 people admitting their error.

This isn't a case of abusing some loophole or misusing discretionary authority. The law is unambiguous and he's breaking it, simple as that. If Congress isn't going to do anything about breaking the law that already exists, passing another law to make it double-illegal accomplishes nothing.

It's already illegal. Congress banned it near-unanimously in 2022. That law allows the ban to be lifted only if Russia withdraws from Ukraine. He's simply breaking the law that's already on the books.

I genuinely mean this. I cannot imagine a more bleak dystopian notion than the idea of all art being turned into slop designed to coddle my exact perceived intentions. The point of literature, film, music, and art is to be exposed to the interior lives of others. Who are these people.
