Frustrated with the slow progress on CAHSR? Apparently the California legislature isn't, given all bills to speed up progress died this year. Why isn't California's signature infrastructure project a priority? calmatters.org/politics/202...

California’s high-speed rail authority made a legislative wishlist. It mostly stalled out
California’s bullet train agency said timely construction of the rail line depended on these reforms. They mostly failed.

Unfortunately Northern Europe no longer has these costs, Stockholm just announced a new overrun and is now a bit more expensive than Germany. Yes, this makes Germany potentially the lowest-construction cost country in Northern Europe. I am unhappy that we're somehow good.

This is my favourite Borges story.
The Witness by Borges and translated by ANTHONY KERRIGAN

In a stable lying almost in the shadow of the new stone church, a man with
gray eyes and a gray beard, stretched on the ground amidst the animal
odors, meekly seeks death like someone seeking sleep. The day, faithful to
vast secret laws, continuously displaces and confounds the shadows in the
wretched stable. Outside stretch the tilled fields, a deep ditch filled up with
dead leaves, and the tracks of a wolf in the black mud where the woods
begin. The man sleeps and dreams, forgotten. The bells calling to prayer
awake him. In the kingdoms of England, the sound of the bells is already
one of the customs of the afternoon, but the man, while still a boy, had
seen the face of Woden, had seen holy dread and exultation, had seen the
rude wooden idol weighed down with Roman coins and heavy vestments,
seen the sacrifice of horses, dogs, and prisoners. Before dawn he would be
dead and with him would die, never to return, the last firsthand images of
the pagan rites. The world would be poorer when this Saxon was no more.
We may well be astonished by space-filling acts which come to an end
when someone dies, and yet something, or an infinite number of things,
die in each death—unless there is a universal memory, as the theosophists
have conjectured. There was a day in time when the last eyes to see Christ
were closed forever. The battle of Junín and the love of Helen died with
the death of some one man. What will die with me when I die? What
pathetic or frail form will the world lose? Perhaps the voice of Macedonio
Fernandez, the image of a horse in the vacant space at Serrano and
Charcas, a bar of sulfur in the drawer of a mahogany desk?

The United States and Canada have way too few elevators - by far the fewest in the rich world. This is true even after you account for our higher shares of detached homes - but if you've ever lived in a walk-up, you know it's also part of the REASON we have so many fewer attached homes.

A huge success of the post Cold-War era is that most of the world dismantled the Death Machine. We can't mobilize 5% of the population of every major European country in 2 weeks; that's just not something we can do anymore. Obviously this has also had some downsides.

@moultano.bsky.social Thinking about this tweet you made. I think being odd at a group level and having right ideas is orthogonal. COVID was initially worried about mostly by epidemiologists who are, as far as I can tell, about as odd as any group of professionals. It just depends.

This got published this morning in the LA Times. 5 point lead for Raman according to an internal.
Raman pollster says she’s in the lead
The Raman campaign shared the results of a new internal poll that showed their candidate with a five-point lead over Bass.
Of the 600 likely voters who were surveyed, 44% supported Raman and 39% backed Bass, with 17% undecided, according to a memo provided to the campaign and viewed by The Times. The survey, conducted by Hart Research Associates in early September, had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
“In the initial trial heat for Los Angeles mayor, Councilmember Nithya Raman is in the rare position for a challenger of already LEADING the incumbent,” the polling firm wrote.
Another poll, commissioned by an independent expenditure group supporting Raman, portrayed the race as a statistical tie, at least initially. Estamos con Nithya for Mayor of LA 2026, sponsored by the Western States Regional Council of Carpenters, said its poll showed Bass with 38% and Raman at 37%.
However, when voters received more information on the candidates, Raman took a 7-percentage-point lead, with 41% supporting her and 34% supporting Bass, according to a memo prepared by the group’s pollster.
The margin of error was 3.7 percentage points.

For the polling miss, I think it's arguably not even a miss, as much as it was just the fact that the decisive voter movement towards M happened in the very last few days of the election, whereas most polls were published on Friday, two days before the election.

That's probably not the cause of the polling miss. The reason my own projection was like that is because it's based on the 2022 election result, not taking into account relative geographic swings.
