The queen of the Netherlands has a pretty recognizable posh Argentine accent when speaking Spanish, with some drift due to living abroad for years. Makes sense given her background. What’s more remarkable is that she apparently sounds posh when speaking dutch too. Genuinely wouldn’t have guessed

Basically no one actually believes in “multiple intelligences”, and think it’s cope. Sorry guys, but it’s a real thing! Being good at one mental task does not necessarily translate into being good at a different one! Same way being good at one sport doesn’t mean you’re as good at all of them

…huh? I mean, not totally bizarre, Uruguay is a leftist wet dream in many ways yet a big chunk of its investment model is attracting FDI via Free Zones, maybe they’re angling for that, but still, bizarre.

Under some definitions the only countries with “old money” are Italy and Japan, maybe Spain. This is stupid though, and not analytically useful. I’m curious thought about when the cutoff should be. I think 3-4 generations makes sense, though it probably varies by region

Essay itself is kind of whatever, annoying writing style too, but this specific idea/insight is really good. Some ideas really do have gravitational structure. Wonder what else is like this outside these people

Underrated national difference is what centralization does to social dynamics. In a country like the US, economic and educational opportunities are pretty spread out, so you get people raised in Dallas, Texas moving to Boston to go to Harvard moving to Chicago for their new job moving to Seattle.

This happens across the Americas. They’re all europhiles. In my experience the big difference is that American elites tend to be anglophiles (and increasingly, boer-files) while in the rest of the Americas they’re much more francophilic.

So, they’ve definitely used the models to make breakthroughs in Machine Learning and improve various algorithms right? It’s definitely not just scaling compute.

Advantage of running extreme (whether real of percieved) candidates is that US polarization makes it so that when you eventually luck into a win it retroactively validates your movement or cause. It happened with Trump!

I think the frequentists influenced lexicographic preference for consistency is fine for causal inference type work, but I do think that once you start caring about efficiency and doing FGLS and stuff like that you might as well just go full Bayesian and specify a prior

6 months expense buffer in cash or short term government bonds, then VTI/VT and forget is good financial advice for 99,9%, but I do think there’s 2 areas of “portfolio construction” which are unexplored in both theory and information for the average joe: 1) human capital 2) housing

Denis Bergkamp’s goal against Newcastle gets even more ridiculous when you consider it was with his weak foot. Like, it’s genuinely unique, haven’t even seen it in casual play against randoms irl, not just on tv. Best goal ever.

A pretty unique source of hitlerism in the Americas is the presence of a rancher elite. Whether it’s cowboys in the US and Mexico, Gauchos in Uruguay/Argentina/Brazil, Huasos in Chile, llaneros in Colombia, they all dress identical with minute differences, and are the reincarnation of hitler.

I would be *very* surprised if this is new but if the real interest rate (r) can be approximated as the nominal interest rate (i) - expected inflation(pi^e) + some risk premium (x) then countries with a history of default basically always get a monetary shock when ~any other shock happens

Utilitarianism is probably wrong (separateness of persons seems true) but there’s something to be said about it being easy to apply math tools to your moral theory. Like, if we believe math is unreasonably effective for inquiry, then being able to shut up and calculate is a big advantage!

They’re wrong about how to run the economy, but socialists were and are directionally correct about the character of the wealthy. I will say though that I remain skeptical that there’s any value added by traditional class analysis, I doubt working class millionaires and billionaires aren’t

I think the non skynet bull case for AI depends on A) how much you think future scientific advances are held back by inadequate theory vs pure empirical work and B) how much AI will be able to keep advancing in that department (it’s already produced original high level research math)

We really need political scientists and sociologists to microfound popularism. Like, what’s needed is a theory of A) the speed of social and political persuasion and B) how much influence certain actors (politicians, activists, etc) actually have on opinions. Crucially though, it has to be issue

Big difference between the US and the RotW is that education isn’t anywhere near as much of a class signifier. Every once in a while a tweet goes viral on latam twitter about having grandparents who went to college means you’re upper class. Thought it was a third world thing, but I’ve seen it in
