President of MIT not mincing words today in @statnews.com www.statnews.com/2026/05/27/s...
So let me say it as clearly as I can: Without basic scientific research, supported by the kind of farsighted public investment that allows large-scale, undirected, curiosity-driven inquiry, the scientific pipeline will run dry.
In daily life, people may not feel the effects right away, or even in 10 years. But we will feel it. And when someone we love needs therapies that could have emerged but didn't or when other countries now
investing in science can launch new science-based industries or run their societies on vast resources of fusion energy or reap the benefits of quantum computing power or advanced medical breakthroughs, America will wish it sustained its leadership in scientific research here and now.
Sally Kornbluth is the president of MIT.

Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions.

A poem for this evening. Not a new one, but one I come back to, and something to remind myself of in the new year.
The first page of a poem titled: "Timelessness." The poem reads:

We make a virtue out of
worshiping a clock-faced god,
living lives of tightly scheduled minutes
as if each lateness
were recorded in some
great and doomful book,
to be counted up and weighed against our hearts
when all our days are done.

As if Creation cared.

There is nothing natural
in the revolutions of a clock.
No ethics
in the rocking trap of the escapement.
Nothing holy
in the gears and springs
that cut the world to seconds.
We chose to treat these things as sacred,
to make a Faith of punctuality
and a Creed of “Don’t be late.”

But this is not a healing rite.
Punctuality is other people’s
demands upon your soul.
And it is not the only choice we are allowed.
The deep world moves but slowly
to the lingered dance
of sun and moon,
keeping time through
an abiding whirl of stars
that are for signs, and seasons, and days, and years.
And we can take that measure for our own
Against the ageless patience of the skies
what worth are all our spring-wrought hours?
Here, our careful liturgy of timeliness comes loose.
Here, it does not matter if the seconds run away from us.
Here, beneath this temple vault of heaven,
is a morality of timelessness
that begs of us to stay until we know enough,
to travel at the speed of peace,
and keep our faith with moments,
not with minutes.
An ethics of the time we owe ourselves
so that, when all our hours have run dry
and every substance of our days is judged,
it can be said that our short stay here was well-lived,
and not well-scheduled.

PEMSBREY: Robotecca, I ain’t feeling too good.

ROBOTECCA: My programmed response is to say words that express a sympathy I can not truly feel.

PEMSBREY: I get it. Ain’t too different from people in that way.

PEMSBREY: Everyone’s out to shut me up or shut me down. And I mean, EVERYONE! I live the most PERSECUTED life IMAGINABLE!

ROBOTECCA: This information is noted and added to memory.

PEMSBREY: Why are things so HARD. Why can’t I just be HAPPY?

ROBOTECCA: It’s a good question—one worthy of serious contemplation. It seems like your feelings are quite justified.

ROBOTECCA: After all, everyone is out to shut you up or shut you down. Astonishing as it may sound, you live the most persecuted life imaginable.

Justice Sotomayor, not mincing words, also says that today's decision will lead to the "creation of [] a second-class citizenship status" for Latinos, who now will have the burden to "carry enough documentation to prove that they deserve to walk freely."
The concurrence relegates the interests of U. S. citizens
and individuals with legal status to a single sentence, positing that the Government will free these individuals as
soon as they show they are legally in the United States.
Ante, at 8 (opinion of KAVANAUGH, J.). That blinks reality.
Two plaintiffs in this very case tried to explain that they
are U. S. citizens; one was then pushed against a fence with
his arms twisted behind his back, and the other was taken away from his job to a warehouse for further questioning. More fundamentally, it is the Government’s burden to prove that it has reasonable suspicion to stop someone. The concurrence improperly shifts the burden onto an entire class of citizens to carry enough documentation to prove that they deserve to walk freely. The Constitution does not permit the creation of such a second-class citizenship status.

🚨BREAKING: The last journalists working for AFP in Gaza have said they can no longer work for the news agency. They are out of energy and they are starving to death. I have never seen a statement from a news organisation like it. 🧵

Now, imagine a simple model in which activists opt to engage in nonviolent or violent resistance and then the state responds with typical or excess force. (To be clear, the world is more complicated, but these simplifying assumptions help us describe some common patterns.) 3/
Figure 2 from paper "Agenda Seeding" shows a decision-tree like diagram in protesters choose nonviolent or violent tactics and the state responds with violent or more restrained forms of force.

Figure 2 summarizes the model. In the first period, subordinate group activists attempt to raise awareness through agenda seeding that involves activists employing tactics, possibly nonviolent or violent, which might make the news. News organization still set public agendas but social movements, like any group seeking greater attention or publicity, attempt to entice media to prioritize their concerns. Southern civil rights protests, for example, were often planned for mornings so footage could be flown to New York in time to air nationally on the evening news (Torres Reference Torres2018). Similarly, movement leaders selected Selma, AL, as a site for voting rights protests partly for its proximity to television network affiliates in Montgomery (Torres Reference Torres2018).

Media attention, however, can be sympathetic or hostile. Even presented with similar facts, different reporters and news organizations often structure stories in systematically different ways (Davenport and Litras Reference Davenport and Litras2003). Civil disobedience, for example, can be covered as a form of justifiable protest or unjustifiable criminality. Kinder and Kam (Reference Kinder and Kam2010) find that whether an issue can overcome societal biases to become salient depends significantly “on the ability of the issue to command the public’s limited and fickle attention and on how the particular issue is framed” (38). Activists, attuned to the ways in which media can frame an issue, routinely fought to craft narratives through a kind of political theater in which protests were “staged” and injustice “dramatized” (King Jr. Reference King1964; Lewis Reference Lewis2017).

OF THE EMPIRE
We will be known as a culture that feared death and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity for the few and cared little for the penury of the many. We will be known as a culture that taught and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke little if at all about the quality of life for people (other people), for dogs, for rivers. All the world, in our eyes, they will say, was a commodity. And they will say that this structure was held together politically, which it was, and they will say also that our politics was no more than an apparatus to accommodate the feelings of the heart, and that the heart, in those days, was small, and hard, and full of meanness.
