Once again pausing my social media break, because this is wild (h/t @jamellebouie.net). It's not just the personality cult, but Trump asking his followers to cheat on his behalf. Very important to realize that this is not a slip, it's strategic: it's tying people's future to the leader's.

If you think this is not a problem, bc mail voting may not favor Democrats, or bc it's too late to affect voting, or any other argument related to the actual voting, you're missing the point. The point isn't to affect the results of the election, it's to create the conditions for contesting them.

This Spain is the best defensive team of all time, and it’s not close. It’s not that they allowed a single goal, they were barely ever under any pressure. And they faced a fantastic attack (France), a fantastic midfield (Portugal, though voluntarily playing one man down), and the 🐐 (even if 39).

Trump last night reminded me so much of when Bolsonaro gathered all foreign ambassadors in Brasilia a few months before the 2022 election, to discredit the electoral system and prepare the terrain for not accepting an eventual loss. He later got an 8-year election ban because of that meeting.

it's interesting there have been no shots and many, many fouls but I don't think this game has been bad exactly? defensive intensity is absurdly high and it's taking a ton of good possession play to work the ball through I figure neither team can keep up this intensity but no idea what's next

I get why people find penalties frustrating in this way but I don’t think that changing the rules to make it *easier* to defend would make soccer a better game. (Also because my pedantry cannot be denied it’s a 79% chance)

The penalty (thank God fot VAR) was the cherry on the sundae. The English are the biggest floppers and cheaters in football, it’s part of their culture.

Bellingham now, ridiculous. I am waiting for all the English commentators to ask for a card, “went down too easy”, is how they put it.

Filipe Campante @filipecampante.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
Amazing how the English pretend to be all about stiff upper lip and fair play, and are out there flopping like they’re Neymar. Kane was embarrassing in Norway’s first goal, then the other guy falling like a sack of potatoes in the goal that was VAR’d. Pathetic.

If you can view *anything* through a lens that isn’t politics, it’s trivially easily to see why so many people love the World Cup specifically and soccer more generally. And why they won’t let that fucking guy and that other fucking guy ruin it for them.

This illustrates why Messi manages to be both widely considered the GOAT and yet also underrated on a game by game basis. Scored a brilliant goal, made the plays for the other two, forced three or four huge saves, his team won, and somehow he did not do enough to deserve player of the match.

Why Lionel Messi is the best male athlete of all time
The big debate before World Cup was simple: Who's the best player? Now that the Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo argument is (hopefully) over, let's go a step further: is Argentina's Messi the best ever in men's sports?
