One day after the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Association of Evangelicals came out against the Pentagon’s plan to livestream an execution, Pope Leo has published a tweet reiterating the Catholic Church’s opposition to the death penalty.
Pope Leo XIV • @Pontifex• •4h

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption.

Good morning! I have two new poems in swamp pink! Here is “Present Tense”:
Present Tense

The flute is older than the wheel
and once was just
as everywhere: on your back
idling in some fescue meadow
or bent, picking over cobble
on a steel-gray shore or upright,
watching streams of wolves depart
a spent kill—you would hear it,
and it would carry you.

I can’t help but notice the irony that World Cotton Day occurs during Black History month. The poem imagines a future in which liberty isn’t an abstract concept or political slogan but a everyday reality. Recently it feels like we are going backwards #poetry #poemoftheday #blackhistorymonth

Fuck ChatGPT flyers. The future is broadsheets.
A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:
Forget ChatGPT Flyers
Say it with
Broadsheets
Unlimited fonts
Stretch them
Or cram a really long sentence into one line for no good reason
No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase
Pointing hands
(They're called manicules!)
Don't be left behind
Broadsheets are the future

It really was very predictable that giving free access was about stealing ideas they could slap their own label on and contribute to the conventional wisdom about their financial future
I think the plan is to get researchers to start using their AI with a limited compute budget, then once they have all the academic data, they’ll basically steal all their ideas from underneath them and run the research internally with their unlimited compute budget!

Even simpler, just turn food into fast food. It’s all most people have time for, and the price of fast food has damn near doubled since 2020. It was $6 for a shake at McDonald’s the other day. $6! A dollar per inch of shake dispensed into a cup with a noticeably smaller diameter, if I was lucky.

Rain Light
by W.S. Merwin

All day the stars watch from long ago
my mother said I am going now
when you are alone you will be all right
whether or not you know you will know
look at the old house in the dawn rain
all the flowers are forms of water
the sun reminds them through a white cloud
touches the patchwork spread on the hill
the washed colors of the afterlife
that lived there long before you were born
see how they wake without a question
even though the whole world is burning
.
.
.

This poem appeared in The Shadow of Sirius by W.S. Merwin, published by Copper Canyon Press, 2008. Shared here with profound gratitude.
