Someone has surely already made a study of his wishcasting and deeply weird use of phrases like “highly accepted” that he slips into his every utterance as if no one knows he’s inventing support out of whole cloth.

I'm kind of itching to get together a free folk/freak folk/New Weird America panel for SCMS next year--conference would be in spring, I think, but panel submissions are likely due next fall. Get in my DMs if this sounds like something you might be interested in doing!

Woodford is just east of Bennington and has a population of 355. My wife and I went camping there years ago during an intense thunderstorm I’ll never forget. We almost decided to run to and sleep in the car.

The grammatical 'colon' and the anatomical 'colon' are not etymologically related. The anatomical 'colon' comes from the Greek ‘kolon’ which means “large intestine.” The grammatical 'colon' comes from the Greek ‘kōlon’ which means “limb.” Both are a means to an end.

It’s a strange period in the northeast…many birds have left, others are molting and quiet, the geese are migrating and the big trees are changing colors…but the peppers still cling to their branches, the fruit trees are still green, the katydids & crickets still call at night in a memory of summer.

Huh. Today in "always look up the etymology because sometimes you're just repeating a myth but sometimes it's weirder and more incredible than you could have possibly imagined" www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/c...
Screenshot of Merriam Webster etymology note for cockamamie:
By the look and sound of it, cockamamie (also spelled "cockamamy") could have something to do with a rooster and the outrageous sound it makes. But in fact, cockamamie is believed to be an altered form of the term decalcomania, which refers to the process, invented in the mid-19th century, of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. (The word referring to the picture or design itself, decal, is a shortening of decalcomania.) The word decalcomania comes from French, with décalcomanie combining the verb décalquer, meaning "to trace" or "to transfer by tracing," and -manie, meaning "-mania." Starting in the 1930s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called decals or—in children's slang—cockamamies. Those familiar with today's temporary tattoos will understand quickly that these were regarded by many as silly novelties, lending the word cockamamie the necessary leeway for application to anything ridiculous.

I heard a bird singing earlier today and I could not ID it, and it was too faint for Merlin to pick up when the wind started blowing. It was high-pitched and sounded like a slide whistle going down and then back up. It sounded like a wood pewee except that it went down first and then up. Guesses?

“So delicious he grew to an unthinkable size.” A poem by Michael Metivier.
The Wine

BY MICHAEL METIVIER
When the townspeople

gave the teenaged Buddha
a glass of wine
so delicious he grew
to an unthinkable size
and froze into a blue statue
that shielded the town
from a wave that broke
upon his back
and would have swept away
the town if he’d not tasted
the wine and afterward the people
were overjoyed and said
they would do good deeds
like carpool their children to school
more often and plant lettuce
everywhere while the Buddha
melted into water and receded
into the calm sane sea.
