Stargate Universe started 17 years ago today on Syfy. I liked the concept and characters, and I wish the show could have had a proper ending. It's too bad the new Stargate series project fell through; we could have at least found out how the Destiny's story ended in the course of a conversation.

The thing about the florid apocalypticism you sometimes encounter on this site is that a lot of people are less horrified by literal civilizational collapse than by the notion that our descendents are just going to keep muddling through and in less than a century nobody will remember us.

I see friends liking and sharing wallowing content on IG and it seems like our generation's version of ipad baby pacifying vids. Unhappy? Watch a front-facing camera video of a guy in his car telling you it's not your fault, community and connection are dead and there's nothing you can do

It’s simple. If you’re from inside the country, you need to go back where you came from and stop trying to replace us, we have a proud culture and you people could never understand it, though there may be a few good ones who can assimilate. If you’re from another country uh… I didn’t say all that.

I strongly disagree with this take. New York, like any other city, has been a city of transplants, and will continue to be one. Immigration makes us stronger. The only people who are not transplants or descendants of transplants are the Lenape forcibly displaced by English and Dutch colonizers.

I don't think we disdain the center-right enough. First, they rode nativist populist tigers to power to get their tax cuts and deregulation; Then, they lost control of their own parties to those tigers; Now, they sit in lucrative jobs as columnists writing about how it's all the left's fault.

The wealthy countries seem to have a core of 15-30% of their voting populations who *just fucking hate foreigners*. This section of the electorate are for various reasons disproportionately well represented among the ultra-wealthy and thus are able to secure some favourable media coverage.

Trump succeeded by stupidity arbitrage. There are a lot of terrible policy ideas that sound like “common sense” to Joe Barstool, but which elected officials with access to policy experts had largely agreed, across party lines, to eschew. The trouble is they still sounded OK to Joe Barstool.

People don’t want to hear diseases just happen. It scares them to death. They need it to be because of malign actors or because they didn’t take the right thing. The fact that it could happen to anyone, anytime, just because is terrifying because you can’t control it. Whether autism/covid it’s fear.

I plead with people not to propagate their "it won't make a difference; his supporters love him" gloom. Actually, Farage is on the ropes and he didn't get there by himself. He's there because people continue to believe resistance does make a difference. It's also wrong on the facts. 1/3

I was actually already working on a piece about how the violent breakdown of society is both morally bad and situation that only produces losers. People are convinced that somehow they will be the one to “win” it, like they’re John Wick or something. But this is wrong.

I see arguments like this a bunch. There's two important reasons this is wrong. The big one first: It's not good to have a president who doesn't obey the rules about to get his agenda done. That's one of the reasons the kids went with "No Kings" instead of "New Kings."
This sort of discourse is over. It's done. It's obsolete. Trump (and to a lesser extent others) have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that if an elected official actually wants something to get done, it will get done. The only question that matters is will they use that power for good or not.
