This is also a reminder that several SFF mags *with* author-and-artist-friendly contracts are Kickstarting RIGHT NOW and backing/supporting THEM is a great way to show MRM that they will lose this argument.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

A somewhat janky digital rendering of the 60s version of the USS Enterprise rendered in greenish grays with orange highlights on the front of the nacelles and the deflector dish. There is a burst of whooshing rays behind it but the background is the default natural paper color I’ve been using and not space black. Reddish-orange text around the ship set in a Star Trek TOS font reads ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...
A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is. At the Antimatter Factory at CERN there are vacuum cleaners in cages. Those cages are there because when you vacuum the experiment hall, you might pick up some radioactive material, and so the vacuum has to be in a time out until enough half-lives of the contaminant have elapsed.

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

underrated part of El-Sayed’s messaging strategy seems to be shaming journalists who ask dumb questions that play into right-wing frames. you can’t answer these in a way that satisfies them, but you can make it embarrassing enough that you impose a toll on asking.
Abdul El-Sayed: "Weijia, with all due respect, this is the third time you've asked about a Twitch streamer ... their whole game is to make us fight culture wars so that we don't pay attention to the fact the president has made $2.2 billion ... "

the right wing machine is very much intertwined with the police apparatus, so it is no surprise that this kind of campaigning happens with intent of normalizing shovelling hundreds of millions of dollars more into police budgets every year.
