If we really have to live under mortal terror of Russian aggression, then I suggest channeling it into “We must defeat their horrible far right racist propaganda and nobody should repeat it” would be considerably better and healthier than what we have been doing for a long, long time.

Socrates said the unexamined life isn't just bad—it's not worth living. That's why I developed PlatoGPT. Everyone deserves a rich inner life of introspection and interrogation, but who has time for that boring self-reflection?👎😴 Now for a mere $40 a month PlatoGPT will self-reflect for you!

A running theme of #Disinfo2026h this year is about the US as FIMI actor. In a completely unrelated turn of events, a few sponsors pulled out at the last moment, including the @eudiplomacy.bsky.social (yet another case of our institutions making me ashamed to be European).
Panel showing sponsors of Disinfo2026, with three sponsors with white stickers over them: Canada, Lithuania, and the EEAS.

hbomberguy had a great joke about how he didn't think YouTube videos had souls until he experienced ones that don't. I have been feeling that about *everything* over the last few years. You don't notice fundamental values like "thoughtfulness" and "human connection" until you see their absence

It ALMOST feels like we’re just starting to reach the normies with “the federal government and Silicon Valley have joined forces to spy on every aspect of your life and it’s called Palantir” and it’s either going to be the turning point for radical privacy or cripple the concept forever.

Here is how politics, in most cases, works: Rich and powerful interests, whether in fossil fuels, finance, big tech, media, meat, pharma or foreign governments, make a demand, and use their sophisticated tools to persuade a government to adopt it. The government adopts it. Please read whole🧵

In both film and video games, you see a ton of *project cancellations* and a general difficulty in funding new projects, which wouldn't be the case if AI was displacing workers in producing those products—you'd expect the opposite, in fact, if it was becoming cheaper to make a movie/game.

What is happening is not that AI-generated cultural goods are replacing human-made cultural goods; what is happening is that capital is flowing out of the production of cultural goods *entirely,* making us all poorer for it.

Damn. With the alt text:
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture':
[Section highlighted]
whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship.
[End highlight]
When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.

I need to write this up but I think this is a really, really important point for understanding why openai and anthropic in particular are doing what they're doing. They never wanted to work on LLMs as such, and they don't think of the things that LLMs are clearly good at as an important goal.

Every Windows update is 100GB and bricks your computer. Windows claims it's 5MB but will chug along and stop working for a week.

Reading this through the “system from nowhere” lens, OpenAI shifts decision-making power to the model; then it pushes for regulatory intervention. So OpenAI wants to hand its own agency to the model and hand its own responsibility to an agency.
