Love the watery effect that the block cutter has achieved here for these seaweed woodcuts
A page from a 17th-century book, with text in Dutch and three woodcut illustrations of seaweeds. The woodcuts have wavy lines across to show they’re underwater

One French exonym thing I particularly like is how we pronounce the final s on its capital city's name, but then put a final silent s on to the names of its two second cities.

Look, that’s the sort of thing that really delights us: a well-thumbed manuscript that contains a wealth of information about a private library and book prices in the 18th c (ms. 1901). You’re always welcome to study this in our reading room (once the temperature has dropped a bit). (1/2)

Noticed on this 17th-century map the spelling "mershe" for 'marsh' – this is the older spelling, before the 'ER > AR' sound change that affected 'starboard', 'darling' and the pronunciation of 'sergeant' too. The change obscures the etymology of 'marsh': as literally 'mere-ish', a lake-like thing.

Happy 283rd birthday, Anna Letitia Barbauld! Here, from 1795, is her at once funny, domestic, and sublime poem "Inscription for an Ice-House," offered in honour of her day, and also as a reminder to my UK friends who are anticipating a heat wave. Do consider putting ice in your drinks please!
Inscription for an Ice-House
Stranger, approach! within this iron door
Thrice locked and bolted, this rude arch beneath
That vaults with ponderous stone the cell; confined
By man, the great magician, who controuls
Fire, earth and air, and genii of the storm,
And bends the most remote and opposite things
To do him service and perform his will,—
A giant sits; stern Winter; here he piles,
While summer glows around, and southern gales
Dissolve the fainting world, his treasured snows
Within the rugged cave.—Stranger, approach!
He will not cramp thy limbs with sudden age,
Nor wither with his touch the coyest flower
That decks thy scented hair. Indignant here,
Like fettered Sampson when his might was spent
In puny feats to glad the festive halls
Of Gaza's wealthy sons; or he who sat
Midst laughing girls submiss, and patient twirled
The slender spindle in his sinewy grasp;
The rugged power, fair Pleasure's minister,
Exerts his art to deck the genial board;
Congeals the melting peach, the nectarine smooth,
Burnished and glowing from the sunny wall:
Darts sudden frost into the crimson veins
Of the moist berry; moulds the sugared hail:
Cools with his icy breath our flowing cups;
Or gives to the fresh dairy's nectared bowls
A quicker zest. Sullen he plies his task,
And on his shaking fingers counts the weeks
Of lingering Summer, mindful of his hour
To rush in whirlwinds forth, and rule the year.

As far as archaeological photography techniques are concerned, this is... erm... "different". 😬😂
You're not going to believe this. A chair is placed on a Roman mosaic. A man stands on the chair and leans forward for an overhead photo. He leans so far that another young man has to hold him up with a broom pressed into the photographer's chest. A young woman is holding on to the chair to stop the entire mess toppling over and ending in tears.

🍄 Fungi collected in Shropshire and other neighborhoods [England], [1860-1902] [Source]
Illustration of three distinct mushrooms collected in Shropshire, England, between 1860-1902. The top left mushroom has a broad, flat, orange-brown cap with visible gills and a thick stem. To the right is a tall, slender mushroom with a light gray, conical cap and long, thin stem extending into visible roots. Below, a cluster of smaller, round, bulbous mushrooms with pale caps is depicted beneath a wide, gray mushroom cap. Handwritten annotations label the species and collection sites next to each specimen, including "Pufula Aurata," "A. mueidus on beech," and "Claducatus Daughmond Abbey," with a note of cap diameter for the largest mushroom.
