This is illuminating. From an obstinately apolitical perspective, it is also an excellent piece on the circulation of small literatures in translation in the 2020s. (The point is: the case is actually not that special.) I will be looking at the data they are sharing.

You all know there is an actual island in Europe that is swapping nationalities every 6 months? The island is called Pheasant Island and is located on the Bidasoa River, France, and Irun, Spain. The swapping goes back to mid seventeenth century peace negotiations between France and Spain. #FRAESP

I wonder whether this applies to drama / movies about literary figures? (Completely, I guess.) Fiction might on occasion be different, if it works more with the literary text. Or music. Pushkin’s Mozart and Salieri—do you need to actually know the music?

There is peer review. And there are also journal editors. Or should be. Editing a journal should not just mean averaging peer review results (2xY=Y, 2xN=N, Y+N=R&R, etc.) —and if that is all the journal can do, it should fold. Fascinating data, maybe not fully thought-through parenthetical comment?

Getting stuck on whether or not these products can help historical or humanities research misses the more important issue which is that the corporations who are selling them simply want to dismantle and replace all public services (education, healthcare, the legal system, policing, etc).
