Regret to inform that multiple correspondents on RNZ's Facebook page suspect that the Green Party staged the whole thing. (By, I guess, hiring an anonymous stunt driver to drive around the barriers in front of an oncoming train, just as they announced the policy.) We live in the stupidest of times.

So MBIE officials recommended spending less, but targeting the money towards local music festivals. And Louise Upston chose to spend much more, but hand it all to multinational companies and overseas artists.
They reveal MBIE’s reasoning as to why it advised the government against investing in concerts, including a lack of “wider benefit opportunities” and “no international brand visibility”, though it said many countries, including Australia and Malaysia, offer concert funds. Instead, MBIE suggested funding local music festivals with a smaller, discrete, one-off fund. This is advice which Upston also seems to have ignored; late last year, the long-running music festival Splore called it quits, saying its $240,000 funding request had been denied.

Ridiculous from Upston. Hard when we are hearing about the folly of Upston’s MSD committees made of ex-caseworkers & retired nurses reviewing GP and medical specialist reports when they haven’t even seen the client? Is this a delaying tactic to paying out because it reeks of wasting $$$. #nzpol

UN Warns of Israel War Crimes as Hundreds of Bodies Recovered From Rubble in Gaza | Democracy Now!
Meanwhile the UN is sounding the alarm about possible war crimes committed by Israel, as hundreds of bodies have been recovered from the rubble of buildings destroyed by Israeli strikes in Gaza. According to the UN, the remains of entire families, many of them children, are being unearthed from sites. This is the head of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Palestine. Ajith Sunghay: “It is estimated that at least 8,000 bodies remain buried under the rubble across the Gaza Strip. Palestinian civil defence teams have recovered over 800 bodies since the announcement of a ceasefire in October 2025, despite severe shortages of equipment, fuel, and personnel. At this pace, completing the recovery of the remaining bodies will take at least 10 more years, even longer when accounting for the time needed to identify bodies, if ever possible.”

A slightly misleading headline – the bills are now before select committee. They won't pass this term. Urgency in this case reduced time between intro and first reading and was otherwise used similarly to extended sitting. Fair to critique this but don't conflate with skipping select committee.

Rustic, because they tasted very, very oldA plastic container labelled Chicken and Pineapple Pasta Salad 240g.
