If we’re all going to have to make choices like this eventually, and we all will, each of us should hope to one day find out we have this kind of moral clarity.

Not true. The stage-managed *appearance* of due process is something a lot of authoritarian states put real investment into, because it directly affects the perceived legitimacy of the government.

One of the absolute worst mental habits you can have for thinking about politics is treating large groups of people as a single person with a single coherent rationale for behaving in a particular way. It’s the Terrible Dem Consultant mindset: “Voters want us to win the argument about X and Y”

Correct. A LOT of people deluded themselves into thinking that Trump's mass deportation pledge was "round up the criminals and gangbangers Biden let in," which was, of course, a completely false narrative. And now people who supported it because they believed in that goal have realized what's up.

Not just impeachable. Impeachment, both pres. and agency heads, is the only option. It's impeachment or nothing. Courts won't stop it. Other tools are impotent. Put them on trial the only way you can. Even if you can't get 2/3, use process as punishment. Make it miserable and costly. It can be done.

Merely being unpopular at the end isn't enough. Lots of two-term presidents left office unpopular only to then be rehabilitated and remembered as history's winners, or at least within the acceptable bounds of mainstream politics. That's the real danger for where we'll be 20, 30, 40 years from now.

The CW idea impeachment backfires isn't true. Nor is there any value in surrendering in advance on conviction. But there's a more important long-term consideration. Looking at all this and saying nope, we're not even going to say he should be removed, is locking in a message for future presidents.

The government moving or hiding jailed people to avoid review by courts isn't some loophole in our habeas corpus rights. This government behavior has been considered a violation of the people's habeas corpus rights since at least the Habeas Corpus Act of 1679. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habeas_...
Jailors were forbidden to move prisoners from one prison to another or out of the country to evade the writ. In case of disobedience jailers would be punished with severe fines which had to be paid to the prisoner.[5][6]
