The ambiguity is a feature not a bug, because vilifying “Zionists” and “Zionism” allows the movement to (1) set the terms of the debate back to a time before 1948 and (2) target any Jew in the diaspora who doesn’t recite the proper slogans

These people are *very* good at persuading and then inevitably bullying ordinary well-meaning left of centre people who don’t share their obsession at first, but they will push until there is a break and either they are expelled or they are running the party. It’s that simple.

I think I can peg the exact moment the anti-Zionist movement went mainstream, and it’s as soon as “Why are all these Jews so obsessed with Israel, it has nothing to do with being Jewish, most Zionists aren’t even Jewish!” became the dominant online sentiment, one that I can’t help but read like this

Various Jewish communal organisations wrote to Green Party leadership on Friday, making the following points, which they have made before. They have received no answer, because the Green Party has no real answer to give. www.jewishnews.co.uk/board-jlc-an...
The communal letter also raises a series of points regarding Green party policy if the motion were to pass, with the writers noting that “it raises immediate questions about how the Green Party will now relate to the British Jewish community, having explicitly branded most Jews and synagogue denominations as racist for holding commitments they regard as intrinsic to their Jewish identities.

“In practical terms, we wish to understand the implications for the welfare and security of Jews and Jewish institutions located within areas represented by Green Party elected officials. How will Green Party MPs, council leaders and councillors engage with Jewish communities, communal leaders and institutions that Green Party policy declares are ‘racist’. Can ‘racist’ Jewish individuals and institutions continue to expect equal access to their elected representatives and equal provision of services? Will Green Party officials be willing even to meet with ‘racist’ Jews, visit ‘racist’ synagogues, or hear from ‘racist’ cross-communal Jewish representative organisations? How will Green Party-led councils relate to Jewish faith schools that fall under their responsibility, that the party has branded ‘racist’?

The proposers of this motion were given every opportunity to change the language. The fact that they did not do so is testament to the fact that they WANT this definition to be as broadly general as possible, and define as many Jews as possible as suspect.

Despite disingenuous protestations to the contrary, this motion does EXACTLY what its fans claim to oppose - conflating Zionism with Judaism. The language around “Zionist synagogues” is so completely open ended that it will end up applying to most Jews, whether they are Zionist or not.

the idea that the nazis were trying to do in eastern europe what, say, the british did in southern africa, only on a drastically sped-up timeframe, obviously has some merit re: the nazis' other targets, but it categorically fails to deal with their judenhass, which did operate on a different logic.

for people desperate to reduce bigotry to questions of pure social structure, it is inconvenient for antisemites to look and act more or less exactly like they always have, despite the dramatic changes in Jewish status in the late 20th century. nonetheless that is the case.

various postcolonial authors conflate these logics because dealing with judenhass on its own terms bores and irritates them and most of them have thrown their symbolic lot in with algerian revolutionaries engaging in some light judenhass themselves.

PS, the discussion which took place in the meeting where the amendment which would have removed the Synagogues element of the motion was debated makes it painfully clear what is going on here. People cannot claim they were not warned. www.jewishnews.co.uk/jewish-green...
The Times described how in response to some members claiming that the amendment proposed by Alston which would have removed the references to Synagogues or organisations was itself conflating Zionism with Judaism, Alston pointed out that in that very meeting, when his brother had stood up to oppose that element of the overall motion, someone had immediately shouted “Zionist” at him.

“He’s a very publicly anti-Zionist Jew, has been so for a long time, and yet still gets tarred with this brush because of his Judaism,” Alston noted, going on to say that “The reason we need this amendment is because, if the Green Party members vote down the idea that the synagogue membership should be protected and should be compatible with Green Party identity, it would be a terrible signal to send to Jewish members and I really think we are not going to do that.”

Despite Alston’s comments, three quarters of attendees subsequently voted against the amendment he had proposed.
