But we have this thing called historical materialism over in Marxtown, and we know that if the country’s biggest and most important city starts to notice that capitalism sucks shit and is making their lives intolerable, that means something, and it is our duty to take advantage of those conditions

This is the blueprint in so many places, from Hong Kong to Pakistan, from South Africa to the American South, just replaying itself over and over again, a class-ignorant nationalism as a perpetual source of reactionary aggression. It’s absolutely insane that we pretend it’s not done on purpose

I get the impression that some people aren't clear what this means. This is the UK state deciding to intervene directly in the healthcare of individual children, depriving them of medicine that their doctors have prescribed for their personal health & wellbeing, in defiance of global best practice.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the shifting baseline concept as applied to everyday life. People in their 20’s now have no memory of highly functional systems, products (from blenders to sweaters) that were so well made you could hand them down across generations, or even helpful customer service.

Ever since Katrina the calls to let NOLA drown have increased. The Netherlands reclaimed 1,000 square miles of land by pumping water out of land a dozen feet below sea level. Nobody ever says let Holland vanish. It’s not just climate change sinking New Orleans. It’s also racial capitalism.

Today was my last day at Google. I have made a conscious choice of leaving for better. I am looking forward to spending more time with my kids, family and friends. I am looking forward to not yelling at my kiddo when he comes into my office because I am still busy until 7 PM due to some broken shit. Because we no longer have a sensible software engineering process and everything is rushed.
I am also looking forward to sleeping through the night without getting paged at 2 AM! Why and for what you ask? Because a job that, I kid you not, literally needed 2 CPUs and 20GB of RAM could not start for some time. It was starved for 2 CPUs, when God knows how many hours of CPU and RAM resources are going into GenAl! I had to get up to get an emergency loan and ensure the job runs fine. And then not be able to go back to sleep until 5-6AM.
Furthermore, I am looking forward to thinking for myself and gaining some autonomy, rather than taking product and technical decisions made up by higher-ups and executives (who are probably using Al for those decisions) and feeding them to Al to generate garbage. This has become absolutely meaningless to me very quickly over the past year. I don't want to be just another execution arm for someone else.
Trust me, I am not against Al. Heck, I have a masters in Al. I use a lot of GenAl myself, but work has lost all meaning to me. This GenAl stuff and the way it is changing software engineering creative process might be cool and fun to someone without a computer science or software engineering background. It might give them a sugar high, making them think they have superpowers now, but I find absolutely no joy in it. Needless to say, the use of Al where it should not be used is reaching new levels of absurdity.
I want to go back to "basics" and think. I invite you to do that as well.
With that, cheers to a better tomorrow. Better for humans, not Al freaking agents!.

I really wonder what the fallout is going to be because the sanitized version of history they’ve sold for a long time is “Jim Crow was a shameful moment in history but we defeated it and came out the other side a better country” and now it’s just… back it’s the end of a myth in the starkest terms

Again this should inspire wall-to-wall media coverage for months. The crowning achievement of the Civil Rights Movement is dead. Black people just lost all of their remaining political power in the South. This is a monumental moment in American history that simply isn't being treated as such.

College is not a “stamp of approval” for “select people”; it is, overwhelmingly, public infrastructure whose function is to educate the public and advance inquiry in all areas of study. It should be free to all because learning serves the social good and prepares people to participate in social life

Conspiracism is a comforting release from uncertainty, but it is one of the weakest and most tenuous such certainties available, it soothes momentarily only to produce endless anxiety. Embracing uncertainty and allowing for change, learning and even being wrong is the only way 😘
