Idk man I feel like even if AI scraped from 100% ethical sources, had zero impact on the environment, and produced gorgeous work, I’d still think you were a bitch for using it

Pretty much every non-hype defense of LLM products begins with "first you must already understand your work extremely well, have ironclad ethics, and also verify all of its outputs in their entirety" and these are simply not realistic conditions for a product to *require* before it can be useful.

🚨New preprint and our results are rather concerning.. We find the "boiling frog" equivalent of AI use. Using large-scale RCTs, we provide *casual* evidence that AI assistance reduces persistence and hurts independent performance. And these effects emerge after just 10–15 minutes of AI use! 1/

So much AI propaganda about “saving time” is capitalist propaganda. You need to do things faster so you can make more money because work has been devalued and full-time jobs are harder to come by. But AI isn’t going to make YOU rich. It’s already devaluing the work and the jobs even more

I keep seeing "all authors use AI, the real issue is they're being forced to be sneaky about it" headlines. Full stop No. This is a lie peddled for normalization. It's schoolyard-level pressure tactics "C'mon, all the cool kids are already doing it. We won't tell. It's fine. We're on your side."

Turns out having a kid is all it took to get me to stop procrastinating on household chores. If you want to get your little tasks done, simply pluck a soul screaming from the void and trap it in the mortal realm. Create a guy from nothing and make them grow teeth. This will get you to do the dishes.

Tax cuts tend to be a net negative for society as a whole because they usually end up benefiting the wealthy more than anyone else, and politicians who rely on cutting taxes to solve problems are bad at their jobs.

The “AI as psychic hotline” reminds me of @anthonymoser.com’s “AI as improv group”
Taken together, these flaws make LLMs look less like an information technology and more like a modern mechanisation of the psychic hotline.
Delegating your decision-making, ranking, assessment, strategising, analysis, or any other form of reasoning to a chatbot becomes the functional equivalent to phoning a psychic for advice.
Imagine Google or a major tech company trying to fix their search engine by adding a psychic hotline to their front page? That's what they're doing with Bard.
—"Our university students can't make heads nor tails of our website. Let's add a psychic hotline!"
- "We need to improve our customer service portal. Let's add a psychic hotline!"
- "We've added a psychic hotline button to your web browser! No, you can't get rid of it.
You're welcome!"
-"Can't understand a thing in our technical docs? Refer to our fancy new psychic hotline!"

The fact that food banks even exist is proof that successive governments have failed in their duties. Food banks are a privately funded bandaid used to cover inadequate government programs. That the bandaid itself is now failing means the government is failing Canadians more than ever before.

it pisses me off when the AI crowd goes “it’s just another tool” like a word processor. it’s not for many reasons but the two reasons that piss me off as a writer: 1) it’s built on large-scale plagiarism and 2) it robs you of the chance to actually be creative.

One area where government isn’t a hinderance: Food safety inspections. Canada has outsourced a lot of its regulatory responsibilities to the US, which has now gone anti-science and destroyed their regulatory capacity. We need to do more in Canada. Government cutbacks ensure that won’t happen.
“Cuts in government funding for regulatory agencies in the U.S. may lead to decreased monitoring and control of animal diseases and plant pests.

“Canadians may lose trust in the safety of imported goods if they perceive the U.S. safety standards have been weakened and/or if they believe that the CFIA is not taking sufficient responsive action.”

The document also proposes a contingency plan in the event of deteriorating communications between government departments in Ottawa and Washington.

“Should there be a breakdown in communication between U.S. and Canadian regulators, the CFIA must be prepared to escalate important issues up the management chain, and flag any risks caused by a reduction or stoppage of information sharing.”
