Most importantly, Sacramento is *officially* the housing king of California. Effing bananas considering how our rents are literally half as much of most of these other guys and still Sac is outbuilding the rest of the state. The housing crisis is a choice! Your city could choose to stop doing it!

2025 residential real estate trends in Yolo County, California prepared by me, a real estate appraiser and resident

Yolo County 2025 Residential Real Estate Recap
First, a personal note: It's been a while since I've updated the website because I've been busy! I spent the last several years earning my SRA designation from the Appraisal Institute, finally finishing last spring. Covid, volunteer commitments, and large spikes in business kept getting in the way, but whew, I'm done with it. To earn the SRA designation, I had to take challenging classes, submit a sample of my reports for peer review, complete a demonstration report, and pass a test.

In the old days, developers would buy old, worn-out mansions, split the lots, and replace them with rowhouses. On the right you have the old mansion, on the left are the rowhouses built to replace the other mansions.

I appraised a property in Davis that received a "temporary certificate of occupancy." I've never heard of that before and followed up with the city. It was valid for 12 months after issuance. When I started asking questions why a final COO hadn't been issued, the city issued it. This is a good idea

I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.
Statement begins:
The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (NWS), is profoundly alarming. It appears that NOAA staff fired today include meteorologists, data and computer scientists responsible for maintaining and upgrading weather predictive models, and technicians responsible for maintaining the nation’s weather instrumentation network (among many others).

Housed within NOAA, the U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayer—equivalent to a single cup of coffee—and yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1, depending on methods of estimation). NOAA and the NWS collectively offer tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year in net economic benefit through a combination of averted losses and efficiencies gained....

BlueSky Historians - what’s the most ahistorical thing you have ever seen in a film/TV show which was meant to be historical? (For me it has to be the use of Zadok the Priest playing during the Papal coronation of Rodrigo Borgia - Alexander VI - in The Borgias. 235 years before it was composed.)

Sigh. It wasn’t a nonevent BUT we took it seriously. It was a nonevent BECAUSE we took it seriously. Same dangerous attitude I’ve seen about ozone layer deterioration: if a major campaign of concerted action averted the problem, it must have been a fake problem. Not the correct lesson to draw!

Well, this was a bit surprising. First, I have been going to Yolo Bypass near Davis, CA very very often and always dream of getting a good raptor pic with the "Hunter Check Station" sign. And I got one today of a kestrel sitting on that sign. Yes, this is a hunter check station.
Picture of an American Kstrel holding something in its talons while perched on a large rectangular wooden sign that reads "HUNTER CHECK STATION" in large yellow letters. The sign also has a yellow arrow pointing up. There is blue sky behind the sign and kestrel at the top of the picture and brown platns / grasses behind the sign in the lower part of the picture. The sigs woos is mostly dark brown with some lighter regions. The sign is held up by two large wooden posts at each end.
