Y‘all know that book banning negatively impacts sales, right? Especially when the authors are mid-list and marginalized. As a Lipan Apache, I’m familiar with erasure, and this is erasure. What’s more, readers who need our stories can’t access them.

Authors Against Book Bans @authorsabb.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Common Myth 3. Being banned actually helps an author's sales.

Reality: Most authors do not see a bump in sales after their books are banned. In addition, many authors lose out on the opportunity to connect with readers at events like festivals or school visits, decreasing their income further. For authors who are not already bestsellers, this loos can be financially devasting.

This is a short story that’s been stuck in me for years. The parallels between Poe’s Masque of the Red Death and life in the 2020s are plentiful. Chords creates a version of the Red Death from the perspective of a physician-in-training moonlighting as a waiter. It lingers. Long Red Death.

If you're wondering why authors are getting so rabid here: First Anthropic stole our books. Then we got denied compensation because of US unjust copyright law and publishers failing to meet their contractual obligations. Then publishers and agents apparently claimed author shares. Now this.

If you object to public-funded housing of homeless people, in the end the objection cannot be the cost, because we pay a premium to be cruel to homeless people. At the bottom of the objection will always sit dehumanizing cruelty and a desire for eradication.

Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

"Island is having one of his tantrums again, the wind asides, the joke being the volcano is long extinct, until it isn't." - Fahad Al-Amoudi
Cinnabar Island
From 'when the flies come'
By Fahad al-amoudi

Who says no man is an island is himself
an archipelago, whose waters are so green
they hide within themselves, like a thief,
or disgraced god, the secret of fire.
Here, the volcano curdles a burlap sack
of hearts. Here, the dead and resurrected
crowd underneath terracotta roofs
like soldiers beneath helmets.

An abandoned house erupts
from the hill by the western shore, stones
scavenge what moss they can. A sign,
English broken as the windows, says
'No Stealers'. How much more is there
to mine from a thing as ordinary as disaster?
Devotion is its own kind of vanity. I see
the ocean has broken into

laughter. Island is having one of his tantrums
again, the wind asides, the joke being
the volcano is long extinct, until it isn't.
