Some good points by Michael but I think the "success rate" issue is a critical driver simply because when it's as low as it is (13.1%), there are automatically (100-13.1) x n grant applications keyed up for the next submission, driving up applications which drives down success rates. Ad nauseum.

Some thoughts on the CIHR Project survey. I am very concerned about panicked “do something” changes in the face of declining success rates and rising app pressure. The same thing that lead to several years of stepping on rakes during the “Reforms.”

Depressing to see all the AI generated grad school applications. These slop grenades waste our time and even if "successful" (getting a position) it will be a terrible match since the applicant was actually the AI. If I wanted a lab full of AI researchers, no people would be needed.

Thread. Apologies in advance, I've been grinding away for weeks on a grant with maybe a 10% success rate. Canadian researchers work in buildings held together with duct tape, run labs on shoestrings, and spend more and more time competing for lower and lower success rate operating programs.
