I love it when the Traitors soundtrack goes unhinged. We’re watching the S4 finale and the last roundtable is set to an ominous minor key version of…. Ravel’s Bolero.

Multiple moments in Spiritfarer and it’s not even close. Top 3 are probably taking Stanley to the Everdoor, finding out Stella’s story, and taking Alice. I’ve been moved by a lot of games’ stories but Spiritfarer is an entirely different category.

If I just want to listen to Mahler and have a good time, would I enjoy watching Maestro? I’ve heard it’s not great but I don’t know if that’s “meh whatever” or “it’s unwatchable trash.”

Might be a hot take but it’s wild to me that Christopher Nolan made two really excellent films (Interstellar and Oppenheimer) and then synthesized their themes into another film that ended up worse than either of them (Odyssey).

like I suspect many of you on This Website, I think a core reason why I find Eliezer Yudkowsky and his rationalist and effective altruist satellites so intensely annoying is because I had a VERY similar “being a super weird, pretentious, hyper-literate kid” experience - I just, you know, grew up.

None of this covers the real real reason. Twenty years ago, gigs were cheap promotional tools to sell expensive records. Now most people listen to music via streaming and don't buy it, records are free promotional tools for expensive gig tickets.

if it took you 5 seconds of contemplation to think of an alternative you should take at least another 5-10 to at least consider the possibility that it at least crossed the minds of 1 or 2 of the people who dedicate their lives and research careers to dealing with the problems we post about on here

fun part if you ask me: higher ed institutions in secular democracies are the closest approximation of a 'marketplace of ideas' as you are likely to find this side of a global revolution and a lot of people who claim to like that idea do not seem to love its results

Stumbled into an online argument about whether ballet is a “sport” and it got me thinking about that whole debate, whether ballet or cheer or marching band or whatever, about whether a very physical form of art is also a “sport.”

I went with “stayed a while” as sleeping there multiple consecutive nights, “visited” as an overnight, and “passed through” as setting foot in the state outside a vehicle. I really just need a solid road trip in the Mountain West and I’ll feel like I’ve been all around the contiguous 48.

Dolly Parton rose from poverty to stardom. She gave $500 to every student in her hometown who finished high school; she built hospitals & bald eagle preserves; her Imagination Library has gifted 300 million books to children. Roger Ebert met her and came away thinking she was a literal angel. RIP.
“In Dallas for the premier of '9 to 5', I had an uncanny experience, and on the plane home to Chicago I confessed it to Siskel: I had been granted a private half hour with Dolly Parton, and as we spoke I was filled with a strange ethereal grace. This was not spiritual, nor was it sexual. It was healing and comforting. Gene listened and said, "Roger, I felt the exact same thing during my interview with her." We looked at each other. What did this mean? Neither one of us ever felt that feeling again. From time to time we would refer to it in wonder.”

Philosophers often bring up the "principle of charity": a willingness to assume good faith in an interlocutor and treat them accordingly. It's good to do in many circumstances. But it is worth formulating a principle of not being a fucking mark. If not during the rise of fascism, then when? 12/

The success of Emily Wilson's translation had nothing to do with Christopher Nolan. The hardcover edition came out 9 years ago and was a huge success. The paperback has been in steady demand since 2018. My store has sold 75 copies (a lot for 1 book for us) and 66 of those were before January.

One thing I will say about Nolan's Odyssey: for a story about a man who canonically wants to hear the song of the most alluring creatures in the world and TWICE spends years stranded while having an affair with a nymph, Nolan's adaptation was weirdly sexless.

The Odyssey is a good, even great film that for some reason rarely captured my heart. Hoping that changes on a rewatch and was just because I didn’t go to the theater in the right mindset or something, because I really, really liked so much of it!
