FFS. Why are Labour pandering to racists on this? 😡 Britain has a diverse population. Urdu is the UK's 4th most popular language. It's spoken in Commonwealth countries like India and Pakistan. Even Queen Victoria spoke Urdu! Some British citizens understand Urdu better than English. Just accept it!

Seeing a lot of academics jealous of this but you should aim higher: I know of an academic who was once banned solely from *marking* and that, my friends, is the dream. (I suspect Cofnas’s contract didn’t actually include any teaching - or marking - making this largely symbolic if so.)

Quite a lot of defending universities in their true sense (critical & innovative research & teaching) seems to hinge on convincing society that not everything can be reduced to profit. Which makes it all the more vital to preserve these institutions as a counterweight www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...
Both ministers and university senior management teams have to recognise that it is in everyone’s interests to replace the current individualistic practice of lopping off random branches of the tree whenever a wind blows with a collective long-term concern for the balance and shape of the tree overall. However, that would take not just political will, but an acknowledgment that the value of certain intellectual and educational activities transcends narrowly economistic accounting systems. More ambitiously, it would require recognition that the task facing a mature society is to adapt its methods of financing universities to sustaining the purposes for which such institutions exist – rather than, as at present, the other way round. Unless and until significant steps are taken in that direction, the present pattern of dilution, damage and decline seems likely to continue.

this post was a great articulation of why we teach, and especially why we teach subjects that students might not go on to "use" (a highly suspicious word). It's also why students should take classes in a variety of fields, to learn new ways of thinking, not necessarily to learn new information
