Once you write these pieces, & find this evidence, they are the story. The only story. And yet, for a decade now, the NYT response to discovering unprecedented crimes, constitutional violations, & corruption, has been to just go back to covering Trump & the GOP as "normal politics." I don't get it.

I don't really know what to do with these pieces, because: 1. They refuse to used "illegal" & "unconstitutional" & "corruption" in the heds, deks, ledes, or body text 2. They disappear from the front page/headlines within 36 hours & never become THE NARRATIVE, contra EMAILS & BIDEN IS OLD, etc.

Glad about the result, but I don’t think it speaks well of us as a country that after two years of human rights violations, war crimes, naked gangster corruption, and contempt for the Constitution, he’s finally unpopular because gas got expensive.

Sen. Susan Collins helped steer millions in federal defense contracts to Navatek, whose CEO illegally funneled thousands of dollars to her campaign. The FBI sought to launch a probe and was eyeing Collins and other lawmakers. Then Trump gutted the unit in charge. THREAD 🧵

to frame resistance to LLMs’ use in specific domains as resistance to expertise as such requires either thinking that tech is the only field that produces “expertise” or (a distinction without much of a difference) that technological expertise is somehow universally superior across domains

I guess I just don’t think software/tech expertise is especially relevant to judging what works best in, say, a history classroom The issue isn’t whether tech people know tech, but whether they think anyone else knows anything at all, and whose expertise bosses and regulators are happier to spit on

I want to expand on this in a short thread. Fascism sucks. It is also not going away: it is an effectively permanent part of modern representative politics because it is an effectively permanent part of human nature. We have to be prepared to push back against it, basically forever.

one of the major issues with Trump in particular is that his entire worldview is rape. he wants to conquer our allies not in spite of their being allies but because they are allies. he wants to ruin and spite them because they propose that there is mutual exchange, which means they are weak.

No one, not a single person of note, is arguing that universities should not enforce rules against plagiarism. What we are pointing out is that it is insane and disproportionate for the attention of an entire country to move to one plagiarist until he kills himself.

But really it just feels like: having a consistent moral code that demands taking Lessers and Outgroup seriously is impossible for populist right.
