Hmm! The new condo in midtown Toronto appears to use a "scissor stair" in what is really a single stairwell.
A roundish building floor plan with a central elevator/stairwell core. It has a bank of 4 elevators to the left, and on the right is a single stairwell 2 intermingling staircases, accessed on either side of the central core. Render of the currently under construction condo at One Deslile in Toronto. It is a rounded tower with varying geometry structure that mimics scales.

Short of far-out sci-fi solutions like programmable matter, there is no way to solve the space problem in cities. Cars simply take up way too much space. There no reason why one or two people need a 2-4 ton living room to get across town.

Just caught up with the puppet episode of Strange New Worlds, and i have a bit of an issue with the transporter distance record Scotty is trying to break at the start of the episode. The record was something like 27,000km. Geostationary orbit (for an earth sized planet at least) is ~36,000km.

Circa '04 I bought a combo VHS/DVD recorder with a built-in HD. At the store it was tucked out of the way on the lowest shelf, and the sales clerk practically begged me to instead just sign on for a cable company PVR. It was pretty obvious what was happening!

now if we had decided to elevate the whole line west of mount dennis, this train would be up and running *a lot* sooner, but protecting doug ford's backyard takes precedence. so it dives back underground pretty quickly, and unnecessarily
rendering of the line 5 extension's elevated scarlett station. the rail line then dives back underground west of the station

This paragraph from Doctorow's thread feels like it was written specifically about the Workday HR/Payroll platform. I swear they must get paid by the click.
It's entirely possible to build webforms that are thoughtful, fast, respectful of our time, and well-processed. The problem is that fielding these forms requires that the form-giver undertake some intensive, moderately expensive work (once), while skipping this step merely requires that we all perform intensive, time-consuming work (over and over and over again)

So I understand that businesses & organizations are apt to use AI despite its flaws because its cheaper than using photographers, artists, etc... But in the pre-AI world, if a stock photo company offered pictures like this for free I don't think anyone would use them?

I do overall prefer the modern Blue Jays logo to the original, but the way they have up-sized the maple leaf is terribly gauche.
The original Toronto Blue Jays logo on the left and the updated version on the right. Both are stylized blue jay heads atop a graphic of a baseball with a red maple leaf at he back of the bird's head. The updated logo has a larger maple leaf and the bird has a pointier beak.

It's not hyperbole in the least to say Musk purchased a six-month shadow presidency for $280 million and used the power of that shadow presidency to 1. Steal the government’s data, 2. Permanently damage the state’s ability to regulate his businesses, and 3, kill non-white people.

Knock-off Enterprise on the cover of Galaxy 666 by Pel Torro. Tower Books, 1968... Evidently not concerned about Desilu's lawyers
Cover to Galaxy 666 by Pel Torro. It features a spaceship that is clearly a slightly modified USS Enterprise from the original start trek. The main bridge is replaced by a red sphere. There is a crossbeam connecting the two nacelles. The title of the book is just above the ship in yellow lettering.

Thanks to @jnoodles24.bsky.social for the link to Aad Moerman's model of the Starfleet repair tug from Armada II. I only deal in TinkerCAD as far as 3D so there's a few caveats here [1/?]
The Starfleet repair tug from Armada II, rendered in TinkerCAD. It is a small Starfleet style vessel with a spade shaped saucer, a vertical boxy secondary hull, and disproportionately long warp nacelles, underslung on long struts that let them even below the secondary hull.

"If you were in charge of Star Trek, what would you do?" Set the show on a massive inter-galactic exploration vessel that has already been outside the Milky Way and out of touch with Starfleet for years when the show starts. Sort pack up the lore and background it in favour of new encounters.

Borrowed a Fourth Doctor comic from Hoopla and boy do I ever hate this technique of photoshopping in the faces of main characters rather than just drawing them. Sticks out like a sore thumb!
A panel from a Doctor Who comic. The 4th Doctor & Sarah Jane sit in a crowd. Their faces are composited in from photos or stills from the show, but everyone else in the crowd is hand drawn.
