...but it might have been interesting if he could also digest carbohydrates to chemically power himself when needed. Maybe combined with photovoltaic hair that he could grow out to maximize light/radiation absorption.

It's interesting that they never addressed Data's power needs. I guess leaving it ambiguous didn't paint them into a corner. The TNG tech manual describes wireless power transfer for combadges & tricorders. Could be Data takes advantage of that system when on the Enterprise...

It will never not be funny to me that Republicans tried so hard to brand themselves as the party of rugged individualism and then ended up with this whiny man-baby as their ultimate avatar.

Hmm! The new condo in midtown Toronto appears to use a "scissor stair" in what is really a single stairwell.
A roundish building floor plan with a central elevator/stairwell core. It has a bank of 4 elevators to the left, and on the right is a single stairwell 2 intermingling staircases, accessed on either side of the central core. Render of the currently under construction condo at One Deslile in Toronto. It is a rounded tower with varying geometry structure that mimics scales.

Short of far-out sci-fi solutions like programmable matter, there is no way to solve the space problem in cities. Cars simply take up way too much space. There no reason why one or two people need a 2-4 ton living room to get across town.

Always thought it was a missed opportunity not to have Homn & Grand Nagus Zek's servant Maihar'du get up to some silent shenanigans together. Maybe as a C plot to a Zek & Lwaxana story.

The TNG technical manual states a transporter range of 40,000km - I presume to account for geostationary orbit.
001
Adam Lytle @nerdburglar.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I have no idea if they ever mentioned the transporter range in TOS, but I think it was pretty strongly implied that the Enterprise was always above the away team? I don't think they ever had to contend with the ship being on the other side of the planet due to orbital mechanics?

Just caught up with the puppet episode of Strange New Worlds, and i have a bit of an issue with the transporter distance record Scotty is trying to break at the start of the episode. The record was something like 27,000km. Geostationary orbit (for an earth sized planet at least) is ~36,000km.

I suppose the only substantial disadvantage compared to a cable company PVR was that it had an old fashioned clock-based recording timer. So wouldn't dynamically adapt to changes to a broadcasting schedule the way a cable box would (?)

It was a pretty nifty bit of home a/v tech. You could record shows to the HD, edit out commercials, and then burn to a DVD. You could use it to rip VHS to DVD, though probably not through copy protection.

Adam Lytle @nerdburglar.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Circa '04 I bought a combo VHS/DVD recorder with a built-in HD. At the store it was tucked out of the way on the lowest shelf, and the sales clerk practically begged me to instead just sign on for a cable company PVR. It was pretty obvious what was happening!

now if we had decided to elevate the whole line west of mount dennis, this train would be up and running *a lot* sooner, but protecting doug ford's backyard takes precedence. so it dives back underground pretty quickly, and unnecessarily
rendering of the line 5 extension's elevated scarlett station. the rail line then dives back underground west of the station

I thought I had seen one but it turns out it was a self portrait (left), and he used himself as a model for the cover of this 70s edition of Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov.
Left: A self portrait of artist John Berkey. A balding white man wearing a white button up shirt. His arms are crossed across his chest.
Right: the John Berkey cover to an early 70s edition of The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov. Berkey has used himself as the model for the figure on the cover, a man whose arm has the skin removed to reveal it is robotic.

Well, I feel like the thing he needs to come back for is resolving the bi-generation extra Doctor that is just living it up in retirement. That's just a wholly unnecessary thing to leave dangling.

Lol believe it or not there is a Doctor Who episode about the moon as an egg with an even dumber resolution: the recently hatched space lizard (or whatever it was) IMMEDIATELY lays a replacement moon egg of identical size and mass of the original moon egg.

This still sets the standard for "super advanced spaceship" to me. It's how I pictured some of the ships in Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. I feel like current VFX would lead to textures and greebling in the name of scale and visual interest, but that's not the right choice for a ship like this.
