I am not given to hyperbole when it comes to university industrial relations, but this feels like an existential event. The heart of the university is being torn out, with long-lasting consequences. These strikes are a last-ditch attempt to stop that. Will anyone listen?

How many times has Satan tempted you to neglect Learning, and follow Gaming?
Four panels from an early modern English printed broadside showing: 1) The School-master and Schollar: a teacher and student in a doorway 2) The Vertu-ous Student: a young man at his desk with books 3) Satan tempteth him to neglect Learning, and follow Gaming: Satan at a table with playing cards 4) SATAN tempteth him from his Study to evil company: satan at a table with men and women playing cards, drinking, and smoking

Reading lots is good for one's writing... sometimes because it provides examples of what not to do. So, today's academic reading beef is articles that take too long to get to the point, especially if the set up is both long *and* repetitive.
