Cervantes's last work, 'Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda', was published in Paris in 1617, the same year as the first Madrid edition. To understand this edition & the context of how it was sold and read, I have analysed the @enssib.bsky.social copy using a book-archaeological approach... 1/2

Nice case of a fake '1584 Viterbo' edition, undoubtedly printed in Paris in the 1620s. The give away ? The coat of arms of Marie de Medici engraved on the title page with the royal crown of France... #bookhistory

Never seen this done to fore edges. It's a school geography primer - perhaps one very bored pupil.
The fore edge of a 1777 German geographical primer, carefully sculpted (scalloped, perhaps?). It is tempting to think it is a representation of a ridge of hills described in the book, but alas it isn't that kind of geography. Not a roche moutonnée to be seen.

I am delighted to present the cover of my forthcoming monograph on the French Renaissance book trade ⬇️ It concentrates on what happens after the sheets are printed, but before the books are read. It is with the publisher, the Presses universitaires de Rennes, and will be out in September 2025.
