With each passing week the impact of the summer heatwaves on deaths becomes clearer. The chart shows deaths occurring in each week of 2025 and 2026 in dark blue. I've added an estimate of deaths which have not yet been registered in lighter blue, and marked heatwave weeks with red borders. 1/4

Plug-in solar panels are coming to the UK from August 27th! It's been in the pipeline for a while & it's already common in Germany. But it's BRILLIANT because it opens up these technologies to renters & ppl w/o their own roof. Plugs into a normal socket & supplies ~ 10-20% of household needs. ☀️🎉

POV: you fell asleep reading philosophy and your brain decided to make a group chat out of it. What a fever dream. The dead humanist philosophers WhatsApp group is relentless... Sisyphean, if you will.
Bertrand Russell (02:50):
"Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom."

Humanists UK (reply, 02:51):
"Ok thanks"

Albert Camus (02:52):
"Nothing is more despicable than respect based on fear."

Simone de Beauvoir (02:55):
"Change your life today. Don't gamble on the future, act now, without delay."

Humanists UK (03:00):
"Guys, please, it's 3:00am"

It's a joke about famous humanist philosophers "group texting" their quotes at 3am, disturbing whoever runs the Humanists UK account.

Woke up in West Cardiff thinking the house was on fire, but the smoke is coming from a wildfire more than 30 miles away. Find myself thinking about the Giddens’ paradox a lot at the moment.
A quote from sociologist Anthony Giddens in 2009, which says “We have to deal with what I call Giddens' paradox. Climate change is about avoiding or minimising abstract, largely future, risk. It is not visible in people's everyday lives and most simply filter it out from their day-to-day concerns. The paradox lies in the fact that if we wait until it does becomes visible - in the shape of disasters that can be unequivocally attributed to climate change - it will by definition be too late to control it.”

I’ve long supported PR but the system for this Senedd election feels like it hollowed out local democracy and representation. From 40 to 16 constituencies severs the local link. The list system encourages blind party allegiance. Wads of generic leaflets but not one person knocked on our door.

This is good. Working in the open feels like a crucial easy win. On the NHS, Wales publishes far less data & fewer programme updates than England. Unclear why. Openness isn’t just good for accountability. It’s a key innovation driver - ask any researcher or policy analyst keen to get hold of it!

If you don’t collect the data then you don’t know whether a problem exists. And if there’s no evidence of a problem, then there’s no need for a policy solution. It’s not an accident that so many OECD countries don’t collate race or ethnicity data. Pandemic highlighted how data can save lives.

New report out today shows the UK increasingly depends on doctors from overseas. Of all licensed doctors in Wales, 38% qualified abroad. That’s up from 33% in 2019. How we talk about immigration matters. Some of the rhetoric today feels really unhelpful. www.gmc-uk.org/-/media/docu...
