How clear is it that Trump's taxpayer funded ads are illegal? I explain why it is 10/10 clear. Senate in passing the law: Ban is designed to stop public funds used for "glorification" of an individual official. GAO: funds can not be used for "self-aggrandizement" nor partisan political purposes.

I don't find the Schmitt Senate fiasco remotely funny. It's just McCarthyism but more incompetent. It's appalling, & a constitutional order that can't end this level of unserious lying & extremist nonsense isn't worth saving. We need massive institutional reform to make sure it never happens again.

#BREAKING: Over dissents from the three Democratic appointees, #SCOTUS grants a stay in the third-country removals case; clears way for Trump admin. to continue removing non-citizens without a full chance to litigate the conditions in those countries (while also taking up the full merits appeal).

Interesting thoughts in this thread. Thinking about his predecessor - strangely he was coming across much more positively next to Corbyn. Sounds like an obvious observation but yet - maybe he could have created a similar (but better) vibe if he would have given Rayner more room to express herself.

Great thread. I'll add that anyone who has ever done any work in the care sector knows that people don't necessarily want all the feedback about themselves some of these AI agents might give. "Thank you, I'm happy not being fully optimized for productivity" is valid.

The rush to speculate that asylum seekers are responsible for every crime in the news is a sort of opportunistic informational terrorism. Until it’s disproved it stokes fear and hatred. When it is disproved there are no adverse consequences and they know that they only have to be lucky once.

Farage showing time and again that he is a disgusting liar. But that said, he is also very astute in using such events to stoke division and fear, and his carelessness with the truth rather helps him as his followers won’t care either.

Very good point-by-point takedown of the attached piece. What struck me is the whiny tone of the piece and the complaints about their own voters whilst being extremely patronising.

The movie is sometimes horribly bleak: it has to be, because Musk has done some terrible things. But he's also a ridiculous figure, and oh boy does it capture that side of things, too.

Every piece I read from the ex-Starmer crew has the same flavour- a bleeding over of their distaste for other more socially liberal colleagues in the Labour Party, which has been retro-fitted into an entire explanation for how politics should work, even as it failed when actually tested.

Asylum seekers & small boat people are being targeted mostly because that guarantees the highest level of publicity. We shouldn’t fool ourselves thinking racist thugs would stop if immigration by small boats went down to zero. They are not stopping now as the numbers have come down significantly.

A short thread on ‘rogue’ AI. One of the fundamental features of this genre of AI is that it disrespects and disregards rights. It is intended to seek out and learn from data, and rights don’t really enter into the equation except when absolutely forced. That covers a wide range of kinds of right.

This was the 28th time #SCOTUS has granted emergency relief to the Trump administration since 1/20/25. That matches the total number of grants during the entirety of the first Trump administration. And both of those totals dwarf the *four* grants of relief (two each) during the Bush & Obama admins.
