I wonder if Americans in general understand the damage being done. There is a ground war in Europe. Russia has invaded its neighbour, without any justification. And the United States is now siding with Russia. What do you think we Europeans think of that?

We Europeans should not focus on Trump, who will be gone in two years. But on the United States. That country elected this man as leader. The country itself is responsible. It can no longer be treated as a reliable ally regardless of who is next elected.

The Senator is correct. And to illustrate the consequences: Europe will have to make sure that there are EU alternatives to Visa, to Microsoft etc. Trump consciously hurts the US to enable crimes.

Add the US sanctions on the ICC, and the breaking of sanctions on Russia, and the US is doing far worse than some countries the EU has imposed sanctions on in the past have done.

I don't see anything erratic here. For over a decade, Trump has prioritised "getting along with Russia"; since 20 January 2025, Trump administration policy has reflected that priority. It's perhaps the most consistent aspect of Trump foreign policy. 🧵on Trump and sanctions.

As for Brexit supporters - many of them have been running from reality ever since, whilst also escalating their positioning further and further, to a point where reality no longer matters. Hopefully at some point they will fade to become history without ever causing even more damage. 🤞🤞🤞

So let's hope that the UK can avoid these people ever getting into more powerful positions where they can & will cause more senseless damage. The US have clearly failed at that task & will find it much harder to come back, so let's be super cautious that we're not getting into similar calamities.

Feels like we all have to wait for the thunderstorm of total silliness to pass, just like everyone is waiting for a whole generation of politicians (and voters) to leave the stage. Meanwhile it might take a little while longer for the Americans to find their senses..... bsky.app/profile/colu...

Your regular reminder that almost everything Trump is getting away with is not because of presidential strength, but because of congressional weakness and judicial deference. The constitutional tools are already there to fix this, but those who can fix it are refusing to do so.

Keeping in mind how distinctly American it is to publicly lynch non-white people, to my mind this underscores the degree to which Trump II (and particularly Hegseth) represents an embrace of the premodern as a form of conflict mirroring. (The major distinction being that Hegseth opposes the beards.)
